Talk to me about your experiences with getting approved with Blue Cross Federal. Would you consider them super picky or more relaxed?

I'm specifically curious about the supervised weight loss period as well as proving previous attempts were unsuccessful.

I have FEP bc/bs standard option and the process went very smoothly. I did have to meet with someone for the supervised part. I can't remember for sure but I think it was 3 times. I had my surgery in 2013. Good luck on your journey! I think my unsuccessful attempts were proven through my PCP records.

I have BCBS Fep and I am scheduled for surgery 28 April 2016. There was a requirement for 3 months supervised weight management, which includes 3 visits with a nutritionist , and you must complete a full 90 days which starts with your first appointment with the nutritionist. You also have to complete a psych evaluation. Keep in mind there may be other test the physician may order.

My primary care physician was able to provide documentation in regards to my weight loss efforts.

In the benefits handbook I believe it is page 62 or 63 there is sort of a checklist that outlines requirements for bariatric surgery which includes bmi requirements and co- morbities. This is helpful.

I would recommend someone going through BCBS Fep to also take a look at the brochures for Blue Centers of Distinction/Excellence that may be in their area.

Hope this helps.

I'm curious about this as well. I called them and was told they usually make a decision within five business days so we'll see. I got two different answers from two people as to whether if I lost too much on my pre op supervised three month diet it would be considered as ineffective. One said it might and the other said as long as my weight loss didn't bring my BMI down below the cutoff I was fine.

I initially was told that once the paperwork is submitted it takes 4 - 5 business days. When my paperwork was submitted I got an answer in 5 days.

Same here I was accepted in exactly five days. I lost about 10% in my medically supervised pre-op three month period.

BC/BS Fed for me was easy breezy... just had to do 90 day supv NUT visits... I just have to pay my inpt deduct. With that invited in med flex spending acct. To help offset copays $35, $100, $350....

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
