Panic before pre op liquid diet.

Recommended Posts

Today is the first day of my two week pre op liquid diet. Now that I am on it I am fine, and feeling calm. I had to do a two week trail liquid diet before, so I know I can do it, that's not an issue. But last night, realizing that it was the last time I was going to really eat for the next two and a half months my brain went into panic mode!

We had gone to my in laws for dinner, and it was a great dinner and I was full. Panic started in on the drive home. I announced to my husband that I wanted a DQ blizzard. He kept driving past DQ. I announced that I wanted to stop at the grocery store and get something. He kept driving past the grocery store. We ended up at home in our driveway, and he gave me a big hug, which was nice. I was then going to go take a hot bath and try to relax. He came and checked on me a little bit later, and found me in the tub peeling a cheese string! So the LAST thing that I ate was a crappy cheese string while sitting in the bath tub of all places. Good grief. On one hand I feel ashamed, on the other hand it's a story I hope I can laugh at down the road.

Did you have any moments of panic realizing that this is actually happening, realizing that your life will be completely changed? What silly or crazy thing did you find yourself doing to cope in the moment?

EVERYONE gets nervous about the road ahead. It's totally normal to feel nervous too. My coping on my failed first go around was just thinking constantly it will all be worth it in the end. I'll finally be able to do the things I was robbed from doing.

Stay strong!!

Hahahaah my last "food" was a bowl of popcorn. I was in tears when i ate it and guess where I ate it? In the tub!!!!!!! :). You are lucky to have a good hubby- mine rocks and I'm so glad for his support. About the food.... We can eat again. We just won't want to. I have a friend who was sleeved and you would never know it- her and her hubby (bypass) go everywhere and love to eat- always planning crab boils, big thanksgivings, I see them out at our local drinking hole in the wall and they look awesome. They still eat and drink, just way way less. I think in the moment it's hard but in the long run we won't even remember this time of "missing out". All the goodies will still be there, and we will enjoy in moderation. It's good, you have got this!!!!!!!

Do you have a xanex??? Take a xanex. You need your sleep to get you through another day that brings you to surgery! And that is a day to CELEBRATE!!!! The surgery part is fine and recovery is a piece of cake..! Try spending time looking through the celebrity sections of news papers online so you can see what you would wear when you lose enough weight or what NO ONE SHOULD WEAR EVER. That's even more fun!!! Seriously through my nurse flat out asked me if I had a xanex (ooooo it felt so so naughty!) but I actually did so I took it and la la la la la.... Birdcage clean, closet organized, plants stared at. It's all good. You. Will. Be. Awesome!!!!!

I understand what you're talking about! I LOVE steak, and I know it'll be quite a while after my surgery before I can have a couple of bites of nice, juicy steak...it's really the only food I'm feeling kind of freaked out about not having. I'm going to try to not eat my last steak in the tub, though ;-)

Omg I had the same feeling. I have my surgery on May 12th for Gastric Bypass, and I just started my pre-op diet. Yesterday, which was my first day,was really hard. The fact that I would never eat the same way hit me all of a sudden. I almost felt like I couldn't do it. I have to say, day 2 was better, and weirdly I am craving normal foods. Like tonight I was at a friend's house for dinner and they were having shrimp. I felt like I had never loved something more like I was loving shrimp in that moment. I endured temptation and had my Soup. We can do it, but i am feeling sad!

@@Megall9, I am right here with you! I'm about to start the 2 week liquids on Monday. A couple of days ago, knowing I was going to get the phone call at any moment with the date and I thought I'd be told to start fasting the very next morning after the call, I went out for a very fantastic Italian dinner with wine. Now, I hadn't had any starches like Pasta, bread, or even any wine in a long time because I've been Paleo for several months. The 1 glass of wine made me as high as a kite, and the food felt like lead in my stomach the next morning. Then yesterday, I ate the leftovers, including the tortellini my daughter had brought home. I still don't feel so well. :) Now, I'm thinking about this fantastic ice cream at a certain ice cream shop on the beach that was always our fave- I haven't had any in a really long time. I'm thinking about driving out there to have it. I feel like I'm never going to have any again. Most of all, I'm thinking about the fact that very soon, I won't be able to eat any actual food for a really long time. I didn't think I was going to be this crazy, but I am! You got some really good replies here and they're helping me, too.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
