Hello,

I am new here and i am really glad i found this place. i am planning to have lap band soon (early september) but i am lost in deciding whether or not its the right option for me, since i heard and read that gastric bypass is the "Gold standard" and all that.. i know its safer and all, but i do like food and i dont know how my life will be like after lap band... any information is highly appreciated..

Hi, I am also soon to have the lap-band done. Right now I am doing my 6 month pre-op diet. Just wanted to say that my reason for wanting the lap-band over the bypass is because I want to have more children and I did not want my intestines messed with. I know that people that choose to have the bypass are still able to have children, but that is not what I want. I have never had surgery before, and I don't want to start with the bypass. You have to do what is right for you. I just wanted you to be able to hear someone else's reason for choosing the lap-band, over the bypass. Good luck to you.:)

Thanks alot for your support TaxGal!

Guys, i am totally lost here, i am just back from a renowned doctor's clinic and he strongly recommended VBG over Lap Band saying Lap Band failure rate is way higher than VBG and that VBG is somewhat safer (what?!) than lap band. i was already thinking seriously about Lap Band and wanted to have it, but after this doctor's words i am totally lost and i dont know how to make a choice. please someone help :help:

i just lost an entire post that i had for you. but the main thing is that i've known people that have done gastric; and they don't always do the right thing but there are a lot of people who are doing well with the lap band. it is the least invasive of all procedures. also, you need to be ready to let go of the food, regardless of the procedure you choose.

don't stress out. do more research; don't just listen to negative stuff. there is negative in everything in life.

and then decide.

if your doctor doesnt want to do it; find another guy who will. even if you have to travel.

best of luck.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
