After surgery--opinions, please

Recommended Posts

My surgery is scheduled for this Tuesday--laparoscopic gastric bypass. My surgeons office told me that, if all things go well, they generally release from hospital on Friday. My son has a soccer tournament on Saturday. It is about an hour away and will last for 6-7 hours. There is some walking from field to field, but it is mostly just sitting. I've told my son and husband that I don't plan on going...but I'm wondering if it might be possible. Opinions?

It's not a huge deal if I miss it, but if I can go, of course I would like to.

Thanks for the input!

Hey...

I had my surgery on Wednesday...im 4 days out . I have had literally the easiest super quick recovery.. even the nurses were amazed... i had no nausea, gas pain or pain in general, no issues with BMs or liquids etc

And even with my super duper amazing recovery i probably couldn't sit upright for 6-7 hours.

I think it would depend on how you feel post op.

Even though i have the best recovery, i am still taking it easy... i don't want to risk a leak

Yeah, that is kind of what I was thinking. I'll just have to enjoy having the house to myself for the day. :)

I had my surgery on a Monday home on Wednesday last thing you want to do is push yourself...after surgery you are vulnerable to infections etc.?..Rest is essential.

You might feel okay but that will be tiring and take alot out of you - and you need to rest and take care of yourself. It will probably be uncomfortable in the car that long.

Thanks to all. I'm going to put the thought that says, "but if you feel good..." out of my head. My boys will do fine without me for one tournament. It is more important for me to heal well than see a few soccer games. Besides, before too long, I will be able to play soccer with my son, not just watch!

I think it's probably a good idea to skip the soccer tournament. I felt every bump in the road on the way home from the hospital.

Physically pain wise I could have done it, BUT the fatigue for the first week or so is tremendous and pushing yourself too hard too soon can cause a major setback. I wouldn't do it if I were you. It's too easy for something to go wrong. In the beginning, like at 2wks out, I had more than 1 bout with dehydration because I thought I could leave my water bottle in the car while I shopped. You don't want to experience that and being on a field out in the sun for that long could be a trip back to the hospital.

You definitely don't need to go. You need to stay home, rest, walk, and sip, sip, sip. You will still be using an incentive spirometer (if your surgeon has you use one). I also had massage thingies (don't remember what they were called) for my legs to prevent blood clots.

Your primary focus needs to be in healing, getting in your fluids, and Protein, and moving around.

What do they give you for pain control when you go home??

I was given a prescription for something (can't remember what it was) but I didn't use it. The strongest thing I took at home was Tylenol.

I'm nervous about the pain afterwords I'm praying that my body takes it easy on me LOL

Mine was more discomfort and soreness than pain.
