Very frustrated, is this normal?

Recommended Posts

I had my surgery on March 4th and so far I've lost 70 pounds which is great and my health has dramatically improved which is awesome. The issue that I am having is that I am eating less and less every day instead of eating more, as I can only tolerate Protein shakes, Protein Snacks, soda crackers, peanuts and almonds, and most deserts which some of those are obviously not healthy. A couple of weeks after surgery, I was able to have Soups, and Pasta and was snacking on things without a problem but something has changed that I can't tolerate any of it so I am practically eating no regular food except for maybe one or two bites. Can't eat eggs, mashed potatoes, Soups, Beans of any type, which are things from what I have read that most folks this much time after surgery can eat.

Is this normal?

Will this change or last forever as its very frustrating not to be able to even eat a little food?

You are eating crackers, nuts, and Desserts? Honestly, those are terrible choices. Stick with your Protein Shakes. What about meat? Have you tried things like chicken salad, tuna salad, and soft fish? What about yogurt and cottage cheese? You really need to try to be eating protein-forward, not carb-heavy stuff like crackers, dessert, and Pasta.< /p>

With respect to all the foods you can't tolerate -- it's hard to know whether it's normal, I think probably a professional should assess that. Have you contacted your surgeon or dietitian for guidance? I think they can probably help you better than we can. Good luck!

I know that stuff is not healthy which is why I am so frustrated as its the only things I can tolerate. I can't eat any type of meat, chicken, fish...nothing as I can't tolerate it. Only stuff I can eat are Protein shakes, Protein Bars, and the Protein Snacks that Celebrity sells. I used to be able to eat an egg in the morning, but now I can't tolerate it as I feel like throwing up.

That's a lot of weight in less than 2 months! Wow! Anyway - have you tried just eating meat or fish? I would stick to Proteins and healthy carbs. Try cheese, hummus, deli meats, ground beef or turkey. I was told not to have nuts that early out. And obviously you know you shouldn't have desserts or Pasta. Congrats on your success so far!

To clarify what i mean about desserts, I mean Protein bars and shakes which to me are desserts. When I'm which family and they are sharing a desert, I might have one spoon to try, especially if its sugar free ice cream. Most folks I talk to, I seem to have lost more weight than usual so quickly after my surgery, so not complaining but just hoping that I can eat meat and chicken in the future and actually be able to down it and enjoy it as I've always been a steak kind of guy.

I haven't had surgery yet but I hear you - I'm going to be sad if I can't tolerate steak. Keep trying different things until you find what works. Maybe some GasX or Pepcid would help.

You really need to be in touch with your surgeon about this NOW. This is not normal. You may need some diagnostic testing to determine what the problem is.

The three most important things after WLS is to meet your daily requirements for Protein, fluids and Vitamins. food is secondary because your body is converting your stored fat into the energy that drives your body. Thus you lose weight.

But on the other hand I agree with the comments from 2GoldenGirl. Your inability to tolerate food at 7 weeks post-op seems abnormal and may be indicative of a problem.

When you say "cannot tolerate", what exactly do you mean? Is it the taste you just cannot tolerate or are you having trouble keeping more solid foods down? If it is the latter, it could be a stricture which can happen around the stage you are at.

Thanks everyone for your feedback. I am going to follow up with my surgeon asap to get his feedback.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
