pre-op, but post-op diet question?

Recommended Posts

I know that the post-op diet is very strict, and i have no intention of going off it. but I'm wondering what the general word is on drinks. at the orientation meeting they told us that some can and some can't drink fizzy drinks post-op (after healing obvs). but what's the general advice on (non-fizzy) diet drinks? is any liquid okay as long as the calorie count is low/zero? or is it really an "only water" deal? I guess I have the same question wrt the pre-op fasting.

Non-fizzy sugar free/low sugar Decaf liquids only. I use Crystal Light, Water, Decaf coffee, Gatorade G2. You can make decaf iced tea as well.

What everyone else said... I don't drink artificially or naturally sweetened anything... All my hang ups with food and I don't drink anything but Water, unsweetened ice tea, and black coffee... My nut says I'm weird for that lol.

I keep getting warned that I need to find something other than Water to drink because I might not tolerate it plain after surgery. That makes me a little nervous.

I am a year post-op, and getting the Diet Coke monkey off of my back was one of the many blessings of this process.

I did have trouble drinking plain Water for a while like many people, but now it is much easier.

Today, I drink: plain Water, infused water (cucumber, ginger, mint, other herbs/fruit, etc.), water with crystal light, sugar-free kool aid, Mio drops, etc., Decaf tea, Herb "tea", an occasional unsweetened regular (black, oolong, or green) tea (caffeinated).

I have no desire for carbonated soda of any kind.

it would undoubtedly be a relief to be rid of the craving for fizzy drinks. right now it's difficult to imagine what it will feel like to not want to have that cold fizzy feeling when I'm thirsty. ???? I look forward to the change, though!

I'm the same way - other than a few Bloody Mary's and maybe some White Sangria ;-) - all I drink is water and unsweetened ice tea. I'm hoping I'll be able to tolerate them after surgery. I will try the infused water ideas @InnerSurferGirl.

drinks can be a little tricky post op. The biggest thing is to stay away from any caloric drinks. You want your nutrition to come from good food and you only have so much room in the budget.

I will say that figuring out what works best for you can be tricky. I only drink room temp Water and hot tea. The reason for the room temp thing is because anything icy cold actually causes my pouch to seize. I know, that sounds horrible but it's simply uncomfortable.

This is really at its worst in the am, I could probably tolerate icy cold later in the day but I simply have learned over 19 months to drink my Water that way.

I am highly sensitive to any artificial sweeteners, they cause severe Migraines so that is why I stick to water. Hot tea is also very soothing.

Occasionally I will have my chocolate chai tea with hot milk as a treat but that adds carbs so I budget for it. There is 0 sugar in it but the milk adds carbs.

I promise you will figure out what works for you and you will be fine with it.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
