How long post op did you really ramp up your walking/exercise?

Recommended Posts

My discharge instructions are to walk 20 minutes per day (can be broken into smaller chunks), and after 6 week check up I'm able to go full steam ahead with other exercise. Just curious to see what other people's exercise looked like between discharge and the 6 week post op check up?

I was advised to do up to 60 minutes of "brisk walking" a day (not consecutive, but broken up throughout the day) immediately post-op until 60 days post-op. I was then cleared for more intense cardio and strength training.

I am exercising 6 days a week, but I have been using gradual, steady increases in exercise, not aggressively ramping up. I don't want an injury/setback, nor to be completely exhausted. My own view is that you need at least 6 months of work to lay down a foundation before you're fit enough to exercise hard. I actually ignored my surgeon's advice on exercise (which were to go real hard) - he may be a very fine surgeon, but he's not an exercise physiologist and he doesn't look like he's exercised himself in many years.

I just did a bit of walking until I was cleared to get in the pool. Once I was able to get in the pool, I really started exercising.

I feel like my surgeon is so lax! I asked him during my 1 week post op visit when I can start lifting again and he said one month post op now I'm worried I'm going to rip my little pouch open if I do it that soon!

Anyway, he told me after 5 days I could do whatever cardio I wanted as tolerated.

The reason you need to be careful with lifting doesn't have anything to do with your stomach as far as I know. It is because of the incisions through your abdominal wall.

My doc also said i could do whatever i wanted after 2 weeks, but Im taking it easy. I have never been a crazy work out person anyway so i want to build up my activity level slowly and sustain it long term

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
