So now that I'm maintaining a healthy size, I have an issue.

Recommended Posts

When I was a size 30 pants and 4x/5x shirts .... I HATED shopping ...

now that 151 lbs is GONE ... and I'm a 16 pant and L top ... I LOVE IT !

I do utilize thrift stores/consignment shops ALL the time ... I find the cutest things!

I don't even mind trying stuff on now ... mainly because I can ... and because I'm not sweating like mad !

I have purged the closet 9 times in the last 9 1/2months ... I don't mind doing it at all ..

Gives me MORE room for the NEW stuff I'm buying tomorrow !!! :)

I did the same thing. Shopped like a madwoman. But I'm at maintenance for two years and I know that all I'm doing is buying more of the same. So..my advice to you is the same as I follow. If I walk into a store, I'll buy something. What I do is avoid clothing stores. It's the only way for me to not keep buying.

I'm definitely a shopper, so I think I can understand your issue.

Right now, I'm still in the weight loss phase. I'm not doing the best job balancing my goal to pay off some debt once and for all and needing new clothes. I'm trying to mitigate things by sticking to places like TJ Maxx, Marshall and Old Navy for now. Especially at Old Navy, that stuff really only lasts one season anyway.

When I get to maintenance, I plan to invest in or bargain shop for really good basics. Jeans, black pants, basic tops that fit perfectly, are high quality and will last. Once I have the basics, I can slow down a little on spending. I figure then I'll splurge on a few trendy items for fun and easily stay within budget. Twice a year I think it's a good idea to go through your closet item by item. Get rid of anything that doesn't fit well and make you feel good when you wear it. That makes room for new stuff.

Well, that ain't gonna happen!

Clothes aren't my issue though, fine leather goods in the form of shoes and purses are. That is where the $$$$$ really stacks up.

You don't even want to know about my shoe and handbag collection. That bad habit started because I was a fatty, too. I justified it because shoes and handbags fit no matter how much you over indulged the week before. :D

I was devastated when I lost 110+ pounds because I lost a shoe size, too. Then I figured out that I can now fit into tall boots. Frye is SO thankful for my WLS.

I loved their boots this past winter. Omg but not my hubby he hates the name lol bought 4 pairs of them and 3 uggs.

Hahaha, I also have this problem! I turned an extra guest room into a closet because my regular closets were full. I LOVE shopping!! My logic is that as long as I can sustainably afford it, why not give myself the joy of buying new clothing? I worked hard for the right to wear a size 2, why shouldn't I get to buy it in as many dresses as I happen to want? :)

So long as you can afford it, I'd enjoy the shopping!

If you really want to curb it, my thin friend who is the epitome of self-control (in a healthy way,) ONLY buys "perfect" clothes; the exact shade, cut, fit, length, style, etc., of what she is looking for. I tend to buy in bulk a bunch of "meh" clothes at my big size, but she stays on a budget really well by only buying what she honestly loves.

I've marveled at her self-control -- walking past racks of clothes, trying on TONS of stuff that looked great on her -- only to walk away empty handed or with maybe ONE shirt out of 15. She's REALLY discriminating.

As a result though, she's in great financial shape and always looks lovely, appropriate, and comfortable in her own skin.

I love it when we are only dealing with good problems in a great and affluent country. Oh hell, we all are dealing with that problem, or we wouldn't be on this site. ;-)

When I was a fatty mcfatster I was constantly shopping because my clothes would shrink from season to season and I was forever looking for that next great outfit. You know, the one that would completely disguise the fact that I was huge and getting huger by the moment?

When I lost all my weight, I went absolutely nuts and shopped the **** out of every high end consignment shop in my area along with all the trendy stores I could finally fit into. Two years have passed since I hit goal and I still find myself shopping like a mad woman.

I've gotten rid of everything that's too big and now my closet is bursting with stylish clothes (teenager approved!) as well as designer pieces that I found at ridiculous prices (Diane Von Fostenburg wrap dresses for $70? Why yes I will! Calvin Klein business wear pieces for $40-50? Yup! Michael Korrs? Kate Spade? Chloe? Yes, yes, yes!!)

How/when do you stop shopping? I mean, how many years do skinny people who don't fluctuate in sizes keep their garments before they grow tired of them?

Because of 20+ years of obesity, I'm used to acquiring new wardrobes each season and now my clothes from two summers ago still fit! I don't know what to do.

First world problem, I know, but I think about this every time I find another perfect dress or boho top or excellent fitting jeans. Sigh...

Shop on!!!

So really... My post was in fun, but also quite serious and I didn't word my inquiry well. How in the world do skinny people who don't fluctuate in size from year to year resist the urge to obtain a new wardrobe? I'm baffled at having shirts I loved from two summers ago that still fit perfectly, that I still love the look of and that are in perfectly great shape.

This sleeve thing still amazes me every freaking day. Absolutely no regrets.

Best part is being able to narrow down the selection by your foot size first so you aren't wasting your time looking at things that aren't available. Then color, then heel... It's bliss.

And their return policy rocks! They are super easy to deal with and the shipping is amazingly fast. I've never waited more than three business days.

All of my thin friends shop constantly and clear their closets out on a seasonal basis.

I think a lot of people think some problem are only fat people problems when they are universal to certain people.

Women who like to shop, shop a lot regardless of size.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
