Sugar substitute recommendations?

Recommended Posts

Trying to significantly reduce carb intake, who knew 1 teaspoon has 4 carbs!!

Anyhow, I usually use 3 teaspoons in my coffee and I am struggling to find an alternative, any thoughts?

I had been using half splenda half sugar, and cut back to 2 tsp. However, have been playing around with stevia, but it seems too sweet right now.

I like equal best.....I've used Stevia before and it doesn't seem sweet enough for me....I had to use more of it. Funny how everyone's tastes are different.

I use Stevia drops. It does take a while to get used to the taste.

I have tried Splenda, sweet and low, stevia, truvia, equal (not bad for green tea) and so far sweet and low is winning for coffee. I think I will try a gradual process like @@Christinamo7 suggested. All of these sweeteners seem to have a lingering aftertaste.

Look into the health issues caused by most artificial sweeteners, including weight gain and insulin response. Organic stevia seems to be the safest out there. Sweet and lo, Equal and Splenda have been linked to cancer, parkinson's, alzheimer's, dementia, and lots of auto-immune disorders.

I feel we should avoid the chemicals because we want to lose weight and be healthy too - not trade obesity for some other horrible disease. It's so hard to avoid the chemicals in low sugar "diet" pre-packaged items, like Protein bars. I do eat them when I need Protein, but try not to have the chemicals in coffee, diet drinks, and processed stuff. I found a Protein powder (Jay Robb egg protein) that was approved by my NUT because I have a dairy and soy allergy. It is sweetened with stevia.

Good luck to you!

I'd always been a Splenda guy until a vacation last month.

The place I stayed had good & strong coffee brewed 24/7 and their artificial sweetener was stevia.

I grew to really like it.

I always used splenda until I started seeing the nutricianist for my surgery. They say ONLY stevia allowed as its the only natural sweetner.

So.........the Premier Protein doesn't clump up in hot coffee? That sounds like a great solution. No downside. We get our coffee and simply cur it with our needed protein. Gonna try this soon.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
