Giving up the scale...

I just had surgery on 4/15 and have decided that I'm not going to weigh myself everyday. I know ..... crazy right!!!! I had surgery to become healthy - period and the last thing I need is another thing in my life to stress about. I'm going to trust in the program and see what happens. I'm not saying I'm not ever getting on a scale again but for these first few months it's going to be only at doctors visits. Anybody else out there not weighing themselves every 10 minutes to see how much weight they have lost?

I applaud you. This early out, you should be focusing on your program, hitting your Water and Protein targets, healing up, and moving as much as possible. So many people get too focused on the scale and forget that they need to take care of themselves. This isn't a race, it's the rest of your life!

That's exactly what I did. For the first six months, I only weighed in at the doctor's office when I had appointments. It was great -- I could feel my body getting smaller, and people commented on it, but if I ever had a stall, I didn't know about it. No stress. I highly recommend it!

I kind of gave up my scale a week ago because I was depressed and angry against almost every thing, and everyone ???? so I promised I'll weigh my self once a week (Mondays ONLY) just out of curiosity thats all because I came into a conclusion that if we took this surgery to be healthy then this should be our main focus.

That's a good plan:) I know I made myself crazy with the scale in the beginning. Right now you want to focus on recovering from surgery and your nutrition/hydration. If you do that, the weight loss will happen.

At 3 years out, I weigh a few times per week. That may be too much for some, but I use to just ignore my weight and the scale. So if I'm not weighing often, it's a slippery slope for me. Once I got to my goal weight, I gave myself a 5-7 pound "buffer" that I wouldn't worry too much, but I don't allow myself to get beyond that. That way I'm catching any weight gain before it because overwhelming to me.

You know what????, that is really a great idea, I will give up my scale and not weight my self "not even on Mondays" ????????????????????????

Fantastic idea. It is just a mental prison. So are all numbers. LOL. I think there needs to be a scale that will only respond to you twice a week. I find myself arguing with my scale from time to time. We don't have a good relationship.

I read this website a lot and I just can't believe that people obsess about stalls after only a few days or weeks after surgery. Because I had my surgery in Mexico I'm more obsessed and concerned with those Spanish documents I signed. Did I give away my first born [emoji33]. With the amount of food I'm eating at this point there is no way that I'm not going to loss some sort of weight in the coming years and as long as I'm not as big as I am now I consider that a win!! I fully understand that this is a tool and not a magic surgery that's going to instantly make me 6 sizes smaller. Good luck to all of you.

Heh! I had my surgery in Mexico too, but thankfully they had English translations of everything I had to sign and translated my surgical records into English for me to give to my PCP here in the states as well. Don't worry. I doubt that they'd have much legal recourse even if you did sign away your first born. Plus, it might give you an out if your first born ends up being a jerk!

I weighed myself every single day at the same time when I woke up in the morning after I peed for like 3 months. Now it's usually once or twice a week (I'm 8 months out).

I wanted to add -- I think that if your post-op eating plan is one of those really loosey-goosey ones ("eat oatmeal until you feel full" "eat 4 oz. mashed potatoes" "eat whatever you want in small amounts") OR if you have been given a strict plan and are not really complying with it -- then you need to weigh regularly so that if you are going off the rails, you catch it. I think those instances are not the norm though.

That's how I plan on weighing myself. Don't. I'll weigh in at dr appointments, but I don't need extra stress on top of my recovery that the scale would add. Best of luck!

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
