Is this a diet to all of you?

I am a new bander and don't have a fill yet (9/5 my next appt w/Dr).

Right now i feel like i am dieting but this is a tricky question.. I am only eating "diet foods" baked fish - veggies - watermelon (no sweets low calorie foods). to me non diet foods = pizza - tacos - enchallidas - Beans - tamale cassarole - sandwiches - chinnesse food... I haven't done any of those non-diet foods which i consider regualr food - but these foods including Portion Control is what got me where i am at "FAT"

I had 1 cup oatmeal for bf - 1 oz turkey (lunch meat) and cup of mushy squash & brussel sprouts for lunch at Noon - 2 - - Clear Protein drink this afternoon and i am starving - just had 1/2 can of oysters and still hungry. I do get full on 1 -2 cups of my meals (usually fish & mushy veggies) but am hungry about and hour later..

I made navy bean Soup earlier in the week and had that for lunch most of this week (little less that 2 cups) and only lost 1 lbs this week.- So I feel that my calories are too high even at just about 850 to 1000 a day.

I guess i need to go out and eat - order what i use to and see how much of it i can eat..

I don't know - too early to tell - sounds like even though i do have some restriction - once you get a fill it helps.

What i am having a hard time with is that i am eating correctly and small amount nd only loosing 1 lbs - i figured at least 2 - it seems that i am eating so much less than before and i have gone to the gym and walked about 5 miles this week - where as before - total couch potato and ate what every i damn well pleased to eat.

I just want to loose this weigh and i don't thnk it can be done eating high fat - high surgar - high carb meals even in smaller portions..

I think that if i wish to loose weight - I will have to eat healthy period and to us "overweight people" that means dieting, lifestyle change whatever title you want to put on it - the days of eating like we use to are over - fried chicken mash potatoes & gravy - salad dripping in ranch dressing - baked potatoe with the works - steak including the fat- brownies - cakes Cookies are gone - imho

I have a hunch that you might be under-estimating caloric intake daily. Two cups of navy Beans is 704 calories per MEAL. Check out Calorie Counter, Diet Tracking, Food Journal, Nutrition Facts at The Daily Plate or FitDay - Free Weight Loss and Diet Journal. You might be floored at caloric consumption.

Life is soooo much easier with restriction. At that point the hard part is getting beyond the head stuff such as head hunger. But just remembe, dieting was something we couldn't do before the band, it was too hard. With a band it's still very hard but it's the kind of hard we can do.

CONGRATS ON THE 86 LBS IN 7 MONTHS:clap2: - YOU ARE MY IDOL !!!!!

Thank you! You know, I've been putting off my work out all day long and I was just sitting here thinking about how much I don't want to do it. After your post I have motivation now.

Thanks again!!!

Well, I have not been banded very long, but the way I look at it the band is not a diet, but a concience. Because I can still eat whatever I want, but if I start overdoing it the band is there to remind me. Since surgery I have been craving 'healthier' homemade foods more and more for some reason, while before I could not stop thinking about junk such as McDonalds french fries, super sized of course. I am working very hard on my head hunger, so I suppose this aspect is like dieting also. I am determined to face my demons and overcome my addiction. I believe I can do this with this tool.

Well, I am two months out now, and have had 1.5 cc in my band and can say some days I feel mild restriction and some days I think, band, what band? So, I am hungry quite a lot. But, I thank all of you for your input since you all know what it's like.

No.

There is watching what I eat aspects. No matter what a person weighs or wants to weigh, one should always practice healthy eating-- fruits and veggies and Protein, trying not to eat too much junk food, aiming for whole grains, that sort of thing. That is watching what I eat. Most people watch what they eat. If they do not, they likely should. Then there is a diet-- Oh I need to eat x,y, and z to lose weight. Those things are about numbers and following certain rules to see certain results, in my mind. For me this isn't that.

I try to eat healthy because I want to be healthy. And its a lot easier for me to do that now. Before the band my hunger made it hard to follow commen sense--now I can be more sensical. Now I like trying to be good to my body and give it veggies different ways. For dinner I had kabobs. They were great! It was a good way to combine Protein and veggies. Its not a diet or a plan even. Its just this wonderful new way-- its freedom from that old hunger. Ok yeah so I get stuff stuck on occasion and if I eat too fast I throw up or if I am greedy with food, etc. Well I can deal with that. Small price to pay. Its just a truly different mindset and physical experience than diets.

Hey Julie, I came across your eating plan on another post. I decided to follow something similar since you've had such amazing success with it. Question: is it due to the fills that the half cup of cottage cheese with half cup of Fiber one is so filling? I tried the cottage cheese with berries today (no Fiber one since I'm still on 'soft foods'), and I was starving! I know I have no restriction, but I thought that Protein would keep me full. Or is it the fiber one?

Losing the weight is a diet to me, except it's a diet I can actually FOLLOW this time. I can actually count calories and stay within my goals with the band. Maintaining, however, is not a diet. I can eat anything I want with the band (ok, within reason -- I can't live on ice cream) and not gain weight. That was the miracle of the band for me. but yes, I do think you have to diet to get all of the weight off. (You might not have to diet at all to get a good bit off, which is a miracle in itself).

Very well said! That's how I look at it too.

In fact I would go so far as to say that in many people "dieting" by that definition simply encourages even more dysfunctional eating behaviour. I know that it does in me. I could never ever do Protein first or a high protein diet because it is just that to me "a diet" and not the natural way I eat. I would have to go "on" it and "off" it. I'm not about to debate the virtues of it or not, suffice to say I'm at goal weight (well, below it) having eaten bread, rice and Pasta the whole way though, within the bounds of healthy eating. Eating what I want in reasonable proportions means I dont overeat anything in particular. Easy peasy.

I dont look at it as a diet. I look at it as I wanted this surgery to help me make some major changes in my health which requires changes in what I eat. The difference is this time I CHOOSE to pick the healthy food because I know if I do I will get results. Before it was a punishment because I wasnt going to stick to it and I wasnt going to keep the weight off anyway.

I do not deny myself of all things bad. If I go out to eat on the weekend and want something not so great for me, I eat it. Only now I only eat a little, before I would have eaten 4 times as much of the junk and a lot more often. So no its not a diet to me its using common sense so I can get the weight off and keep it off.

:)

the only thing i count is carbs because low carbing it works very well for me.

i log everything on My food Diary :: Online Calorie Counter w/ Diet Journal & Exercise Log

Ditto.

I cut out all white carbs because I feel so much better when I do. It's the better way for me.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
