April 5 Operation - Trying to transition to soft food

Recommended Posts

I had my operation two weeks ago. I've felt awesome since the 3rd day. I'm trying to transition to soft food. Now I feel like the food can't go down. Even my Protein drinks are going down very slowly. I threw up for the first time this morning after eating a scrambled egg. I haven't been able to finish even one Protein Drink since I recovered from the egg episode, which took a few hours to feel well enough to head into the office. It feels like I'm swallowing a baseball now. I'm assuming this will pass as I learn how to eat but I'm curious how you all handled this transition and if my new issue is common or even normal.

I think you need to call your surgeon's office and make sure you don't need to be seen, and please let us know how you are doing!

eggs were rough for me the first time I ate them. Or should I say "egg" and "it", since I could only eat about 3/4 of one egg over a 45+ minute period the first time and I ended up lying on the floor in pain? I didn't throw up, but it definitely felt "stuck" for a while. The challenge when you first move onto soft foods is that you really have to chew and eat SUPER slow and stop at the first sign of discomfort instead of trying to eat as much as you think you "should" eat. My problem was I really thought I "should" be able to eat a whole egg at that point and I pushed myself way too hard to try to finish it. If you are still in pain and having trouble keeping things down later today or certainly into tomorrow, call your surgeon!

I'm fine now. In fact I was fine the next morning. I realized that I had eaten entirely too fast and too much. I was doing the morning rush with the kids. Lesson learned. Taking things slower now. Thanks for the support.

@@Reena 4/05/16 Glad you are feeling better! Yeah it's a real challenge to chew thoroughly and east SUPER slowly. The good news is, that's only temporary. Once you are all healed up, you'll be able to eat more normally. I remember the day I had my first Protein Bar at maybe a month and a half out. It took me almost a full hour and I finally just gave up with about 2-3 bites of it left. Now, at 20 months out, I can eat a whole Protein bar in 5-10 minutes no problem!

I'm April 5th too! I am still on yogurt and applesauce. The thought of food makes me sick. I tried mashed potatoes and the gas/ reflux pain was so horrible. I'm literally scared to attempt it again.

Mashed potatoes are starchy. Try yogurt, refried Beans, or cottage cheese.< /p>

I'm on day 7 and I ate eggs no problem at all today . I was hesitant after reading people's responses about them. I wanna try stuff with more flavor but then again i don't want to rush . So I been sticking to the liquid diet for now and just adding one thing in at a time .this week it's egg, next week probably oatmeal . Although I'm craving Beans after seeing someone post them

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
