@@Andrea I would suggest 2-4 weeks off. It takes a few weeks to be not as sore or uncomfortable. Better to request four weeks off and if u feel better sooner then return sooner. I was so glad I took the extra time off it was a long healing process. But everyone is different and if it's a desk job maybe you can go back sooner. Best way to heal is walk walk walk! Best of luck

I was first patient in OR on Wednesday and went home Thursday evening. I was off that Friday and the next week. I was fine on Monday. I have a pretty physical job and just couldn't lift anything over 10 lbs for the first few weeks. Everyone heals and reacts differently.

I would plan for atleast one week and see from there if you are OK to go back.

Good luck!

Jane

Wow! Thanks everyone for your posts! I spoke to the RN at my surgeon's office last night who finally returned my calls, and she said that as long as I can 1) urinate on my own, 2) get up and walk, and 3) hold fluids down on my own, then I should go home that very same evening. Yikes!! After hearing your experiences, this sort of worries me. I also have a hiatal hernia that will be repaired at the same time. So, I suppose I'll have to just wait and see. I've got just 5 more days!!

My hospital stay was 3 days, 1 day for surgery, 2 recuperating. I took 2 weeks off (1 week for surgery and then 1 week recuperating.) How much time you take off really depends on your job. I have a desk job in a small office where I don't have to lift or walk very far to get what I need.

I had surgery on a Wednesday, home on Friday. While I did go into work the following Monday, it was just for a few hours. It was over the Christmas holiday so 3 partial days was all I worked that entire week after surgery.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
