Will I ever be able to eat more than two bites?

Recommended Posts

I'm about 3 weeks post op and I'm tolerating my mushy food choices okay, but it seems like I eat two bites and feel full. Then 15 minutes later I'm starving and eat two more bites. And that's my cycle, is this the way its going to be? I feel crazy.

You will. I promise. At 3 weeks post-op, there is still a lot of healing that needs to happen. It' gets progressively easier and easier to eat more and more until you get about 9-12 months out and then it should stabilize. I am 20 months out and seem to have more restriction than most at this point, but I can manage a lot more than 2 bites now. I can do a good 3-5 ounces of meat at a time now, depending on the type of meat and how it's prepared.

It is the way it is right now while you are healing from surgery to your stomach. It is not how it will be long term.

yes you will! and the funny thing is I assumed I would be sipping for the rest of my life, and I still had surgery. what a relief it was to find out that the sipping was temporary too. hang in there.

You will. I'm 5-1/2 weeks out, and I first noticed an increase in how much I can eat once I hit about 4-4-1/2 weeks. Everyone is different in their rate of healing of course, but you will notice a difference. I was able to get in 1/2 cup of cottage cheese or Soup or refried Beans at about four weeks. something more solid (like fish), I can do 2.5 oz now.

Fortunately, I haven't had a bit of hunger. I eat on a schedule cause I know I have to.

Hang in there!

I will be three years out in May and I can easily eat an entire 1/4 cup! Sometimes I can even get in 1/2 cup and if I push it, 2/3 cup. I regularly eat a whopping 2-3 oz of meat or Protein but any more than that and it's coming back.

It's annoying at times, but the farther out I get, the more thankful I am for my restriction. I could totally eat around my sleeve if I wanted to, and I have (holy 20 lbs batman!), but when I watch what I eat and make great choices, my restriction is real and it keeps me on track.

I love that I can eat so little. I wouldn't change it for the world.

I'm 10 months out and can eat 1/2 cup or more of everything. Sometimes I'm scared that I can eat so much. But I haven't gained any weight and try and keep the carbs low.

At 20 months out, I can eat up to a cup of some foods now.

Enjoy it while it lasts.

I'm nearly 3 months out & felt the same way in the beginning! I remember being stuffed after 2 small bites of chicken & 15-30 min later, I'd feel crazy hunger like I hadn't eaten in days & it came on all of the sudden...then another bite or 2 of chicken. So weird. By 2.5 months, that crazy hunger feeling started to happen less & I could eat a little more. Stick with it & remember that what you feel & experience now isn't the way the rest of your life will be! There are even more changes by the 3rd month. Good Luck to you!!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
