I have hypothyroidism. My surgeon just required that it was managed with medication. Only a month out and I have already had to get my medication lowered and my PCP says it will likely be lowered a few more times. I am 19lbs down, so in the middle, but I just finished a long 3 week stall.

@@csawesome,

The doses can be so tricky with surgery and weight loss.

I have been on 100mcg since January this year (2016), and for 2-3 weeks after my WLS my Hyper symptoms came back: I couldn't sleep, my pulse started to race again, had bad cramps in my legs .... felt wired but also very tired.

I had my levels checked 3 weeks post op, and I did not hear from my Endo, so I thought all was well ....

After reading few posts re WLS and thyroid, I realised that my Thyroxine levels were probably too high for a while.

I am sleeping much better now, my pulse is back to normal, and I have lost 11kg (24.2 Ibs) so far.

Just had my blood work done again, and will see my Endo next week.

This is such a learning curve for me, both the recovery from WLS, and the thyroid med symptoms to watch out for.

I read on the Australian Thyroid Foundation site, that the best TSH level is at 1.0

Any lower, and some people get the Hyper symptoms, any higher and the weight loss may slow down ....

I guess, it is all individual though ..... For me, I just need to keep an eye on any troublesome symptoms re-appearing, or other new ones showing up.

I start 8 week post op soon, and will have to wait and see what happens with more weight loss.

I certainly don't wish to be awake all night again, and feeling so hyper ....

Yes, I had my 3 week stall, that lasted 2 weeks.

All OK again, and steadily losing again.

Good luck to us all :)

i suffer from hypothyroidism and have lost about 60 lbs total, and although my weight yoyos from 184 to 189 and back again, it never goes above 189. my original goal weight loss was 80 pounds. now, being only 20 pounds away, im still a size 14...so i want to lose a total of 40 more pounds or so.

my thyroid hormone readings are still really bad despite me feeling much better. i do know that i eat about 1600 calories per day now, down from well over 4000 calories per day pre surgery. my doctor believes my thyroid has something to do with my weight loss once again becoming difficult. i received my specialist referral two weeks ago and am waiting for my appointment now.

@@mrsbailey921, was 1600 calories recommended by your surgeon?

Usually during the weight loss stage, a lot of people are recommended to eat between 1000-1200,but I'm sure a lot depends on gender, height and other factors.

I need to lose about 20lbs too and this thread has really helped. My thyroid med has never been adjusted since surgery, so I go Thursday for blood work. I'm curious to see if that has played a factor as to why I haven't lost anything in 5 months.

I see the surgeon Wednesday and hoping to get a surgery date and approved for surgery. I'm concerned about being denied due to hypothyroidism.

If anything, your hypothyroidism will make them want to give you the surgery more.

I am also hypothyroid. My weight has fluctuated from fat- to a good size, my entire life. I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism in 2010- because I had seen a segment of "The doctors," about thyroid disease, and it prompted me to get tested. I've struggled the past 6 years... Trying to balance my Levothyroxine meds to get my ts4 & tsh to a healthy level, and finally have gotten it to the point where it's almost normal. Having hypothyroidism plays a huge role in the inability to lose weight successfully, if your levels aren't where they should be.

Most people don't understand the struggle of the thyroid. I have had thyroid problems for years. At the end of last year, through the beginning of this year, I was suffering from a terrible earache. I went to several doctors to eventually find out I have a lingual thyroid. My thyroid is on my tongue instead of in my neck. It was enlarged and that was causing the earache. Sorry, I went off topic of WLS.

Wow, I've never heard of this either .....

Thyroid issues can be so evil .....

I've had Graves (hyper-thyroid) for years also, but Officially diagnosed last year. It gave me insomnia, anxiety and panic attacks, and lot more other "goodies" ....

It runs in my family .... I've suffered with it for at least 25-30 years, untreated, until recently ....

When all the blood levels are good, the difference in health is amazing!

AT this stage, my NUT's calorie recommendation is 800 per day.

Sometimes I go over to 900 or 1,000 calories. Usually when I have more carbs.

Mostly though, I manage the 800 calories per day OK.

Myfitnesspal is great help with keeping food diary for me.

I had my thyroid removed at 48 for suspicious nodules it has been enlarged all my life and I have battled with weight all my life. Coincidence? I think not. I had to put my WLS on hold to address the thyroid but they had no problem going forward with the surgery later. This was only 3 months later. I've lost weight but I still think its harder for me due to the thyroid stuff. Regardless its definitely better now than before WLS.

I too have Graves Disease and had RAI (radioactive iodine) treatment to kill off thyroid function. I have had to increase my med dose since surgery though we are now starting to bring it back down (though my dose is still higher than it was pre-op). I have had to really learn the symptoms and adjust my dose very slightly myself as the drs opinions all vary. I feel best at around 1.0-2.0 TSH. My primary Dr ran a test and it came back at 4.59 and she told me I was fine. Um no. I was miserable. The last test I had was .74 TSH. My endocrinologist said it was fine. I knew I was feeling slightly hyper so I lowered my dose myself. I take 150mg per day and when I adjust I do so by cutting the pill and adjusting by 1/4 pill per WEEK so it is a very small adjustment but actually makes a difference. For what it's worth, my doctors have all required that I take name brand Synthroid and NOT the generic as the generic tends to not be as consistent. I know millions of people take generic but if you find it fluctuates a lot, it may be worth switching to brand name. Also my endocrinologist requires me to wait 8 weeks in between testing and dosage change. He says as you get older, the dosage change can take even longer. (I am 48.) So just wanted to throw out my 2 cents and what I have learned on this crazy thyroid journey.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
