Can I Have Optifast After Surgery?

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know if it's ok to continue the Optifast after surgery? I'm having a really hard time finding a Protein Powder I can stomach and I didn't mind the optifast. I have a whole case left. What are your thoughts?

I don't see why not? It is a Protein shake and you can tolerate it, I'd say go for it.

I was told Optifast has too many calories

and not recommended after surgery

Definitely talk to your nutritionist and/or Doctor. I was in the same boat, none of the Protein Shakes were sitting on my stomach and the only one that was even sort of working was Optifast but it has a lot of sugar. When I told the PA that Optifast was working she didn't like the sugar content but was willing to compromise because it had the Protein that I needed. Good luck to you!

Thanks everyone. After I posted this I really read the nut facts and was shocked at the amount of carbs/sugar. I've decided I will only use it on days when I absolutely can't stomach anything else.

Sorry. I didn't realize that something that is designed to help a person loose weight would be so high in carbs and sugar. I would never had said yes that it would be okay! Just shows you really have to read your labels. I use Premier because it has such low carbs and sugars.

Good Luck.

Reading labels is a must - what you expect to be good for you often times is not. Some of the Protein Shakes have as much or more sugar than a snickers bar! Alot of "fat-free" foods are worse for you than full or 1/2 fat option. If you can't tolerate shakes - try finding Protein Water (no sugar/no fat) and see if that's better.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
