Can you count the water in the protein shakes towards the water goal?

If only liquid from H2O counts as "liquid," can someone explain to me why human infants don't all die of dehydration before they can start drinking Water at age 6 months? It looks to me like their little bodies and digestive systems are perfectly capable of getting all the liquids they need from either breast milk or water mixed with baby formula. If they can get the liquids they need without having even a drop of (unadulterated) water, why can't I?

Humans survive and thrive as long as they get (non-poisonous) liquid from just about any source. If anyone told me that only water "counts," I'd ask them to show me the peer-reviewed, published, double-blind study proving it.

Fair point.

The consensus is that there is no consensus, its all over the board.. i had another sleever at the same bariatric clinic i went to, told the exact opposite of me. i was told "no Protein drinks do not count towards your liquid goal", and the other sleever was told yes by a different NUT.. now you would think 2 NUTS (no pun intended but funny) would at least talk with each other and speak on the same page..

So here is my 2cents.. I don't count Protein shakes, but I do count coffee, I drink mine straight with a little creamer.. now there is some scientific evidence that coffee dehydrates you, but the initial consumption in liquid, I can't be held responsible for how my body breaks it down :) (thats the 13 year old in me)..

I do try and get 24oz of crystal lite in, i don't count my vodka drinks I have sparingly throughout the week ;).

My NUT's recommendation is at least 64oz of liquid a day. Of which, she wants half to be Water. The rest can come from skim milk, soy milk, light low fat yogurt, broth, sugar free popsicles and sugar free jello.Since there have been so many different responses, you should probably check with your nutritionist/surgeon's office for your plan's recommendations.

I asked another group this same question just a couple of days ago and the answers I got were all over the board. (I was sleeved Mar 28). In the end I decided for me, any liquid that does not contain caffeine gets to count towards my daily Water amounts. Caffeine doesn't count because it is naturally dehydrating. I almost never drink caffeine so that works for me!

Thanks all - all the responses have been great! I don't have a nutritionist and my doc has insisted on up to 3L of Water.. He's crazy!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
