Upper body / back pain after surgery

Recommended Posts

Ok so I was sleeved on April 13, 2016 and have had the worst upper body pain since I got out of surgery. My shoulders and upper back are so sore. I was told it was gas from them pumping it into my belly during surgery but it still hurts so bad. I have been walking and taking Gas ex strips but it doesn't seem to be helping?! It's also causing it to be very painful when I swallow anything! Almost like there's too much air in there ?!!

Make sure you have talked to your Surgeon and if it's expected then be sure to take your prescribed pain meds and keep walking. Concentrate on getting all of your fluids in. Hopefully you'll feel better soon.

I am sorry I don't have an answer for you, but don't be afraid to call the on-call doctor. It is probably the gas and swelling but never hurts to ask a medical expert. I had some issues with another surgery with that kind of pain and they said it was gas but still..... In the meantime while you are waiting on a call back, try laying on a heating pad or even putting a heating pad on your stomach. That seemed to help my gas. Oh and you can take more of the Gas-X strips than it says on the package. The strips are actually a pretty low dose. Good luck! Call the dr and don't get dehydrated! Just take tiny tiny sips every 5 minutes - set your timer on your phone and use a medicine cup.

Peppermint us all I drank when I got home. Works wonders on your tummy and gas.

Congrats on your sleeve. I'm 4 months out and 71 lbs down. Never felt better. I had some complications with and incision opening up. Took 3 months to close. So I wasn't allowed to work out.

Despite these speed bumps we endure it all ends up being a distance memory.

Walk as much as you can. It helps the gas move out.

Good luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
