55% gastric sleeve!?

I'm 33 and have a BMI of 32 + PCOS and insulin resistance. I decided to go for a gastric sleeve but my doctor said l because of my low BMI he will perform a restricted sleeve gasterectomy where he will only remove between 50-55% of my stomach so I can loose around 20-25 kgs and not more .. I tried searching the Internet on this but couldn't find anything so has anyone done this? Would it really work!! This is a self paid surgery so i really need to make sure that I am doing the right thing. I tried consulting another doctor and he said the same thing it will be a modified gastric sleeve but couldn't tell me exactly how much of my stomach that has to be removed

I have never heard of this - I would research it as well. I suppose they just don't want you to lose too much weight. My doctor advised he would be removing 80% but I have a much higher BMI.

With a BMI of 32, surgeon may decide that doing the normal amount of restriction could lead you to lose too much weight - I'd get a second opinion if it were me.

In what I've read the sleeve operation can remove anywhere from 50-80% of your stomach. Your Surgeon may remove less than someone with more to lose.

Once you are healed you control your calories, there is no malabsorption. So you can control your weight loss with your calorie intake.

NO.WAY.

There is no reason you shouldn't have the full VSG. ESPECIALLY if you are self pay. That's crazy. I'd find a new surgeon. You aren't the first lower BMI candidate and you won't be the last. You won't lose too much and if you do, you can easily up your caloric intake to compensate.

Unless he is only charging you 50%, I'd demand FULL service for full price.

First of all, if your surgeon removes only half of your stomach, she/he won't be removing all of the "fundus" -- the stretchy part of your stomach that produces ghrelin, the hunger hormone. So you won't have that normal benefit of a full VSG.

My surgeon said no matter the start BMI they always remove the same because the body will determine the final weight and there was no need to change the sleeve size. Self pay is 12,000 where I am.

Thanks to all replies. I did go for a second opinion and like the first said I am a candidate for a modified gastric sleeve but didn't tell me what was the percentage he suggests removing.

Thing is the surgeon I went to is one of the top surgeons in the region and anyone else will not be as well qualified and experienced as him. And I can't afford paying for another consultation with another surgeon because a) that would cost me consultation fee. b ) I have to travel to get another opinion. And it's not easy to get an over the phone consultation. The surgeon I went to is not where I live and I travelled all the way to consult him.

My bmi was less than yours pre op... I've had the "normal" sleeve and at 6months I am still 5kg off a normal bmi.. It's hard work loosing even with, full sleeve. I wonder if u get this half sleeve and it's not enough if it will cost you again to have full sleeve... Probably better off doing it right the first time. I would definitely get another opinion.

I have not heard of the modified sleeve.

Thank you so much. A reply like yours is exactly what I was looking for. Someone with a low BMI and either had the full sleeve or modified sleeve. I had my doubts that why I was searching. And I haven't felt really comfortable or convinced after I met with the Doctor even though he is a well reputed doctor and one of the very first to introduce the surgery in the region back in 2002. I am trying to seek a 4th medical opinion but it's really hard trying to find a reputed doctor near where I live.

I wanted to hear someones experience with a similar situation or a medical documentation. That's the difference.

Plus it's not about having the full service if I'm paying the full price.. It's about would that service suite me or not.. But thanks to all
