So, I just got my gallbladder out on 4/11/16, like 4 days later I got the call with my insurance approval and a surgical date. So my question, I'm already healing from my gallbladder and the gas pain is killing me, how much pain will I be in after my bypass? I think I'm just seriously nervous because of the gas pain I have no

Sincerely,

I had bad gas pain with my gallbladder. Walking helped me. Haven't had bypass yet but I'm hoping it's not too bad

Pain is subjective. What you feel or can tolerate varies from what I will feel or tolerate. I didn't have any gas pain after my bypass. More so incisional pain.

I had both my gallbladder out several years ago and had RNY after. I cannot compare the two because I had an open gallbladder surgery that required 8 weeks off work to heal.

I will say that I am guessing the pain will be similar.bfor me the gas was the most uncomfortable part of bypass surgery. However it should only last a few days to a week. The more you walk, the faster it disappears. Also while laying or sitting use a heating pad. Drink tons of Water to flush your system and use gas x chewables. I personally think once your bowels start working the pain is worse and the gas x will definitely help with that.

The best thing you can do to get the gas out is walk walk walk and drink lots of fluids.

Hope you feel better soon! It is so worth it! I promise!

I had my gallbladder out years ago, plus many female surgeries. I was sleeved on March 4th. I didn't have any gas pain. Tops of my shoulders didn't hurt at all. I have Chronic pain and I hardly too any pain pills at home. I've lost 30 pounds so far and am 39 from goal. I even got to go off my Blood Pressure Ned's two weeks ago. The best thing to do for gas pain is walk. In the hospital and inside your house.

I have had both and I'd say they were fairly equal. The gas just plain sucks. I mean we can get a guy to walk on the moon but we can't suck out all of the gas after surgery. Ugh. I'm so sorry but just think of it as a means to an end!

I've had a couple abdominal hernia repairs over the years and have experienced gas pains with one of those surgeries.

Last October I had VSG & umbilical hernia repair done. I had absolutely ZERO gas pains from these. ZERO.

The only pain I had was from the hernia repair. That was it.

I've never had my gallbladder out, but I've had hysterectomy in the past, but they did that without cutting me open. I've never really had gas pains from any other procedures done.

I had RounY on Monday, 4/11, and I can tell you the first 3-4 days the gas pain has been horrible. It has begun to subside on Day 5 post-op. Today I have more pain from the JP drain that I have coming out of my abdomen more than anything. I hope they remove this on Tuesday at my first follow up. It is uncomfortable and I have to keep changing the bandaging around it. Didn't know about this part. I don't think everyone has this though. So in reference to the gas pain, I had pretty bad gas pain, but it passes.

Try to walk 30 minutes per day before and after surgery. It really does reduce the gas pain and surgery pain. It makes the recovery process go smoothly.

When you are in the hospital try to get up and walk every 2 hours. It minimizes the gas.

I took no pain medicine after I left the recovery room in the hospital after RNY surgery. I didn't need any because my pain level was so low.

I wish you could have solid reassurances, but I agree with dhrguru -- it's different for each person. My procedure was 3/4/16. I'm supposed to be in "Stage 4" eating (venturing into "regular" food territory), but I can't swing it yet. I tried some tuna fish pureed and it turned me into an astonishing farting machine!!! I was instructed to stick on "Stage 3" menu a couple more weeks (baby foods, cottage cheese and believe-it-or-not, refried BEANS).

I feel very fortunate in that while I've had gas -- no gas PAIN. I just felt like I was able to jet propel myself to MARS from that tuna fish venture. Quite tricky when you are out in public...!

Upside: as you are learning to eat based on hunger rather than reacting to cravings...I gotta think that gas pain is going to help tremendously in putting the brakes on old eating habits/patterns! But yikes! It can really hurt, I'm sure!!! GOOD LUCK.

I just had 2 surgeries in one week, and jokingly told the dr to push all the gas out before he closed! I think he must have listened, because 2 surgeries 2 days apart and not one gas pain!

Gas X strips helped a lot after I had my Lapband placed. I plan on using them again after my bypass in a month or so

I can honestly say I didn't have huge pain for the first two days after surgery, but then when I came home, you tend to move around more because you are in your own space, and you don't have nurses and nursing assistants there for take care of everything for you, so you are doing more than you were in the hospital. That is when the pain became stronger. I'm on Day 6 post-op and haven't taken any pain medications yet today so far. I do have pain but more discomfort and not really enough to take oxy for.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
