@@BonnieGail Wow, 2 tests that took 2 hours??!! Mine was a 5 minute conversation. That's it. Actually, I had to do this twice because the first time was at one hospital and it was with a social worker and it was a 5 minute conversation. This is the one where I was joking around, which I do when I'm nervous or in an exceptionally good mood. She didn't have a sense of humor for sure and she flunked me. Barely even looked at me--eye contact maybe once. Made me very mad which is why I switched to a different surgeon/hospital and had to see the psychiatrist but again,it was just for 5 minutes and was only a face to face conversation. I passed with flying colors though I could have made a lot of jokes at this place. This psychiatrist was in the old wing of this hospital and to get there you have to go up one flloor, through some crazy hallways, then down 2 floors, round and round, and then back up in an old elevator to the 4th floor. All these hallways seemed old, dingy, and deserted. It felt like I was in a very strange dream. And then the waiting room was hilarious. There were a few chairs and a coffee table, some bookshelfs and end tables. Everything was empty. Kleenex boxes were empty, bookshelves were empty, candy bowls empty, and I can't remember the other odd stuff there but it just seemed odd. THen when I got into the psychiatrist office, again, all his bookshelves were empty, his desk had nothing on it, there was nothing anywhere. I started to think I was getting punk'd! And I wanted to comment on it but have learned my lesson. Just really weird. You had to see it to understand how off it was.

I am so very sorry for your loss. Having lost both my parents at an early age, I understand the anxiety and depression that comes along with grief.

Only time will heal and all the good memories will comfort you.

Hugs!

Thank you

I know what it is like to lose both your parents. I lost my mom and dad within 11/2 years of each other and it was terrible but knowing how wonderful my parents were I know they are together in a much better place then this little blue marble we call earth. I am sure this is the same for you, stay strong better days are ahead of you.

Hello there,

I am a newbie and I wanted to ask what the psych evaluation will entail? I don't wanna say the wrong things but what if I have an issue with anxiety? My dad just passed so if they ask if I am or was depressed will that fail me? I also have been on anti depressants and anti anxieties when my mom passed to so
I'm wondering if they view that info? Thank you for your help in advance.

Just an update. I took my psych evaluation, I passed everyone was right. I did have to take the MM2 I think it's called it was 370 questions. I asked about this test and apparently it's been used for police officers and ministers as a personality test. Although I was littered scared I did look into therapy afterwards just because I think it's does a body good. Since I have decided to do the gastric bypass my stress is practically gone it's so true how mental it is. I have not had to take any anxiety meds and I asked about the meds I was on also and it would not be a problem just the absorption rate after surgery. Just in case anyone has the same questions or situation. Thank you for all your help, this is like the best support group ever❤️

Hi everyone. I also have a question about pre op psych exam. I'm on 4 different psych meds (Prozac, Wellbutrin, trazodone, and Xanax as needed), will this be a problem at my psych exam? I plan on being 100% honest with the Doctor, but I'm afraid that either I won't get approved or that I won't be able to take these meds post op. Has anybody had an issue like that.

I got off all mine a year before I started. My primary dr thought it could cause problems getting approved. I was on lortabs, xanax, and welbutrin. But I never asked my dr. Sorry I couldn't help more

Thanks for answering my question. I'll see what my PCP thinks. I've been off my meds previously, and it's not pretty. I don't have my consult until July 1st with the bariatric surgeon. I went through the beginning of the process in 2014, and I barely remember if my meds were an issue.

Yeah I never tried on the meds. I was on all mine for 3 yrs, and I struggle some days now. But for the main part from all I've heard and went thro, the psychiatrist wants to make sure you are in a good place now and understand what ur getting into. That u realize it isn't isn't a quick fix and u have to put in the work

Unless your bariatric surgeon requires you to go to a certain Dr. for the psych evaluation you can shop around. The first one I called I was told that I would have to take a two hour test. I thanked them hung up and called another. It was a one time visit and all we talked about was why I wanted surgery and if I had a clear understanding that it was just a tool and the lifestyle changes I would have to make.

I agree with the others. The main thing they are looking for is that you are doing this for the right reasons and that you understand that this is just a tool, not a magic bullet, and not to get a skinny as possible, and look great (even though you might). It's about your health, saving your life, etc. Best of luck!

I'm on all those except Trazadone and had no concerns relative to that during my psych eval. As long as you're depression and anxiety are in control there shouldn't be an issue. I would not suggest coming off of them. You may need them post-op (as the hormones can exacerbate symptoms). You will answer alot of questions and the Psychiatrist will determine if you are a good candidate and if you could benefit from counseling or they may discuss your meds. If there's any chance of substance abuse is a major concern but I found that depression and anxiety is only an issue if it's not controlled (if you've had recent hospitalizations, etc). Most of us dealing with morbid obesity have depression issues. Good luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
