average weight loss your first monthout

I am almost a month out and i have only lost about 30lbs. - 10 before the surgery. I know i need to exercise more but I have a lot of nausea still. What do I need to do?

Just start slowly. If you cannot put in a full 30-60 mins of exercise start small. Walk to the end of the block, park your car further away from the door when you shop, do some light stretches, or some hand weights. Just doing anything really. Basically make a routine even before you decide what exercises you are going to do. I have rearranged my schedule to accommodate for an afternoon exercise because the end of the day exercise wasn't working for me. By then I was emotionally and physically spent and it was hard to do anything of any meaning. So carving out a protected time should be the first step and then doing just something light to cement the routine til the nausea goes. Once it's gone though you need to dig in and push yourself. It can be scary at first, but I do an hour of elliptical a day on some killer programs and in the beginning I could only do 3 mins without feeling like dying, but each day push a little harder against that wall. Challenge yourself to go to 5 mins then 10 mins etc til you reach that place you are looking for. I love my hour of me doing my thing. I feel so much better(and tired LOL) afterwards.

I lost about 15 pounds the first month. You've lost almost a pound a day and your body is dealing with a HUGE trauma that has just been done to it. It's completely normal to obsess and worry about your weight loss progress but trust me when I tell you that you are only harming yourself by worrying about it. I worried about it, along with pretty much every other wls patient ever. Now here I am 8 months out and down 140 pounds. I was nearly 400 pounds, had the bypass, and still only lost 15 the first month. I've NEVER lost 30 in one month. It all adds up, and the amount you lose is not what having this surgery is all about. It's about regaining your health. So focus on your health, getting in your water/protein/vitamins, and the weight loss will follow.

As for exercise: I didn't do a whole lot for the first two months. I was one of those who had a tough time recovering, and it wasn't until a few months ago that I started getting any of my old energy back. I don't even make it much of a point to exercise purposefully. I walk a little extra in the grocery store, I run up the stairs a little faster than I normally would, etc. I also see a trainer/physical therapist about once every two weeks. I occasionally (like once or twice a week) use my recumbent exercise bike for 45 minutes-an hour. That's a LOT less than many people aim for, and yet, here I am, down 140 since surgery. You will get there too, just take amazing care of yourself and all other goals and dreams you have for yourself and your body will come too!

I lost 22 my first month, start slow and at least get a mile or 2 of walking in per day. For now it may seem like your weight loss is moving slow but those pounds add up really fast. I started at 226 and I now weigh 163 and I'm only 3.5 months post op. Also don't let the scale get to you, although the number may be the same you could've lost plenty of inches. I had many weeks where I woke up and the scale had finally moved, I would suggest taking progress pictures so you can monitor your change that way. : )

I lost 20 my first month, but I recovered really quickly. I was able to walk a 5k at just under a month out from surgery. I didn't start exercising besides walking until almost 2 months out and then I started slow with a very slow Couch to 5k and swimming also very slowly. I did a lot more walking than running and quit when I got tired or something hurt. Month 3 I started a weight lifting class, but was more about learning how to lift than lifting anything significant.

Take it slow. I know it feels like forever, but it will come off. Remember this is a marathon not a sprint. The pounds will add up, but they will also stop/stall if you do too much too soon. Exercise is important for building muscle and reducing loose skin, but the biggest part of this is eating and making wise choices.

I am like you, I am in my 4 week postop and have only lost 26 total (13 was preop) and the scale hasn't moved in two weeks. I am eating and drinking like I should but the only exercise I can get is the walking. I am not healing as quickly as others and still have a lot of pain.

I think it's relative to where you started. 30 lbs is great!!! I'm a month out today and I'm 26lbs down. I started at 273lbs, I'm 5'5, and didnt lose any weight prior. But I also have been doing a minimum of 8,000 steps/day since 1 week post op.

Don't be discouraged! You're prob on track. How much did your surgeon predict you'd lose? How far are you off from that goal?

Monday will be a month, and I am weighing about 210 lbs. So that is 23lbs since the surgery. My doctor didn't say exactly what I was supposed to lose each month,just that I probably would lose 100+ lbs overall. So I have a long way to go. I see my doctor next week and I will be sure to find out if I am on track.

It's really hard to say what any "average" weight loss may be. My goal for myself was 40 lbs lost by the time I went on vacation in July. Well, I'm 5 weeks post-op tomorrow and I'm down 44.2 lbs today since surgery (I lost 28 prior to). And I only just started adding exercise on this past weekend (I mean, I've walked A LOT as they instructed). I'm struggling with the exercise, but that's probably because I want to do too much too fast to combat the skin sagging and such. I have to step back and realize the 30 mins on the treadmill/bike/elliptical is good and it'll get easier to add more over time.

Listen to you body and you'll be fine. My Mom had it done as well, and she said she lost VERY slowly at first, but it all added up. I'm actually worried that I'm losing too much, too fast. (And that I'm going to panic when the first major stall happens).

I don't have a scale in the house. My surgeon recommended that. I've been following the eating plan and I exercise every day , at least 5 days/week, sometimes 7, for 30-60 minutes. I go by how my clothes fit. Clothes that were skin tight on surgery day are now very baggy and falling off me. I'm down 3 sizes in past two months. My next weigh in is my 100 day post op visit which will be May 31st. So between now and then I follow the eating plan and I exercise and we will see what my body does! Don't worry, focus your energy on taking care of your new body with good nutrition and hydration and you will see results.

Regardless of what that scale says, nothing beats putting on something that used to be tight and realizing that it now looks like a tent. (Well, there is the panic afterward of buying or not buying new clothes!) I donated 2 large bag's worth of clothes this past weekend, and that was probably the most satisfying thing after these last 5 weeks. I've hit my first stall, but I'm down at least one-two shirt sizes and down 6-8 inches with pants - those are the measures that count the most, if you ask me.

I am 6 weeks out, with a 1 week pre op diet. I lost about 30 pound total so far. My doctor said to expect about 20 pounds the first month, 10 after. Women loose slower and my BMI was not very high, 44 or so to start, below 40 now. My nutritionist and surgeon said I am on track. In addition, my last appointment with my nutritionist showed I lost over 20 pounds, and it was all fat, no muscle. I prefer to focus on food goals and exercise, and let the scale do its thing. It is easy to obsess about it though. I want to get below 250, and the scales refuse to budge. Maybe next week.

I am 8 days out of surgery. I have lost about 10 pounds. However I did not lose any weight from yesterday to today。

That's over a pound a day! That's great. :)

I had my 5-week post op yesterday and they said it's pretty normal to only see 4-5 lbs a week to begin with, so it sounds like you're ahead of the game. And like everyone's said, everyone is different. Keep up the good work!
