About 3 months after gastric bypass surgery I noticed some hair loss. Now, 6 months later, I have lost about 1/2 of my hair on the crown of my head. I am in panic mode! Has anyone else experienced this? If so, when does it stop falling out, if ever, did anyone have to get a wig? Does your hair grow back? What can I expect? Any help will be appreciated.

I'm 11 months out and my hair is still falling out & breaking off. Every time I brush my hair I cringe. I've been told it will stop and I'm still waiting. Damn! I certainly feel for you.

THEY PROBABLY PUT YOU ON XERALTO OR IT'S GENERIC VERSION. I HAD TOTAL KNEE REPLACEMENT AND

THEY PUT ME ON XERALTO FOR 30 DAYS. AFTER THIRTY DAYS I HAD 5 LARGE BALD SPOTS. I ALWAYS HAD VERY THICK HEALTHY hair. THEY DON'T TELL YOU THAT ABOUT XERALTO , BUT ALL BLOOD THINNERS CAN CAUSE hair FOLICLE DAMAGE. THE MAKERS OF XERALTO DON'T LIST IT AS A POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECT BUT THEY CERTAINLY SHOULD. NORMALLY AFTER A SURGERY, THEY WOULD HAVE YOU TAKE AN ASPIRIN DAILY, BUT WITH GASTRIC BYPASS , YOU CAN'T TAKE ASPIRIN. MY KNEE SURGERY WAS NOV. 23RD. AND JAN 3RD I WENT TO GET A HAIR CUT AND THEN I REALLY SAW HOW MUCH Hair loss I HAD EXPERIENCED. I HAD TO GO TO A DERMATOLOGIST MONTHLY FOR CORTIZONE SHOTS IN MY SCALP. MY HAIR DOES NOW APPEAR TO BE STARTING TO COME BACK. AFTER A MONTH ON BLOOD THINNERS , MY HAIR LOOKED LIKE SOMEONE WHO WAS ON CHEMO. YOU CAN GO TO SALLY'S BEAUTY SUPPLY AND PURCHASE A PRODUCT THEY HAVE THAT DISGUISES THE BALDING AREAS. THAT'S WHAT I DID. IN THE MEAN TIME, MAKE SURE YOU REPORT IT TO THE FDA ONLINE AND YOUR SURGEON. IF IT IS XERALTO THAT YOU WERE TAKING, JUST KNOW THAT IF YOU START BLEEDING INTERNALLY, THERE IS NO ANTIDOTE. IF YOU ARE TAKING A DIFFERENT BLOOD THINNER AND START BLEEDING INTERNALLY, THEY CAN GIVE YOU A STRONG DOSE OF Vitamin K TO COUNTERACT IT. GOOD LUCK WITH THE HAIR LOSS. YOU WILL FIND THAT THE BYPASS IS MORE THAN WORTH IT. I AM 5 1/2 YEAR OUT AND IT IS THE BEST THING I EVER COULD HAVE DONE FOR MYSELF. I PROBABLY ADDED 15 YEARS TO MY LIFESPAN.

Thank you for your insight. I don't know if they put me on xeral but I do know they had me on blood thinners during and after my surgery for three weeks. I am faithful taking my Protein and Vitamins plus Vitamin E that may help according to my beautician. Thank you again.

Sandy

I am washing my hair every 3 days and that is helping me. I do not even run a brush or comb thru my until the 3rd day. I just throw my head over and blow dry each day and use my fingers. it has really been helping. I don't stress so much now when I wash my hair and see how much comes out.

My hair started falling out around month two and stopped around month six. I took Biotin religiously, however it just creates new growth, it does not prevent it from falling out. I also used Nioxin shampoo/conditioner, both of which helped it grow back faster. I would literally have a handful of hair when I was done washing and another handful when I was done drying. I was certain all of my hair was going to fall out and I was going to be bald, but when I asked others, they said they could not even tell. I am ten months post-op and at goal now, but still take Biotin and I can see a ton of new growth!

I have lost about half of the total amount of hair I had on my head. It was extremely thick now it's probably a normal amount. It happened pretty evenly all over and it has definitely slowed and I even noticed some new sod coming in on the fairway (I have lots of new little strands sticking out). If it got any worse I would have gotten a wig and went on my merry way, because hair will grow back but for the first time in probably 10 or 15 years I am not overweight.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
