Hiatal hernia and Sleeve

Recommended Posts

I have a hiatal hernia and I'm looking to get the sleeve. Thoughts on having the surgeries done at the same time.

Thanks!

I had a small one and had the repair along with my sleeve. My recovery would have been fine - except I fell down a couple steps onto a concrete floor the day I came home from the hospital. The bruising around my ribs swelled my esophagus shut for a few days, so I had to go back in the hospital.

But if I hadn't been a dope and fallen, it would have been fine!

I also have a hiatal hernia that the surgeon will be repairing at the same time as my surgery......I think this is the normal protocol.....in fact I've also read that some surgeons don't even test for the hernia before the surgery because knowing it's there doesn't change anything......while they're operating they check for a hernia and if there is one they fix it....so I say...yay! two for one! :-)

My surgeon and I knew about my hiatal hernia prior to my sleeve surgery, so the initial plan was her to fix it while in there. Well, once she was inside and looking around, she found a small umbilical hernia that she also repaired. She said she does a lot of hernia repairs when doing sleeve surgeries.

I had a band to sleeve revision and a hiatal hernia repair all at the same time. Surgery took 4 hours and I had no complications during or after surgery. I was really sore and in a lot of pain for about a week afterwards but I got through it. I am over 2 years post op now. I feel really good and all my lab work is excellent. When you start eating solid food again make sure you measure everything. After a while of doing this you will be able to eyeball it. Don't overeat. Protein first. No liquids an hour before during or after meals. You will get used to this routine and eventually you can eat whatever you want and even sip wine with your meal or some other beverage during your meal. No carbonated drinks though. Can't have the bubbles expanding in your stomach. I really miss drinking cold beer. When I say that you can eat anything that you want that means a portion only. You will not be able to eat very much but it can be anything that you want. That's the beauty of it. I don't feel deprived like when you are on a diet. I can go to the fridge and make myself whatever I am in the mood for. My wife can cook anything that she wants because I can eat it. I end up throwing most of it away but I feel satisfied. Good luck.

I had a hiatal hernia repaired at the same time I was sleeved on 12/10. Total actual time in the OR was one hour. Surgery time varies from one person to the other. I would go under anesthesia once not twice if I could avoid it.

Good luck to you.

That's my biggest concern. I don't react well to anesthesia so I would prefer going under once. I asked my Dr if he would do them at the same time and he advised he likes to do them separate which I found odd.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
