Any music instrumentalists out there?

Recommended Posts

I'm a professional trumpet player and got the sleeve on April 5. My doctor told me to wait 2 weeks to play which I will do (outside of the occasional 1 note long tone to prove to myself I still got it).

Any other musicians out there?

professional musicians? lol heck no. ive been playing guitar for just over a year. i was a sound tech on the side for several bands and vocalists, and i was a budding amateur opera singer and a mobile dj as well.

No more opera, after losing over 200 pounds, my wind is nothing like it was and my voice even changed .

I have used the guitar to help me as well, when I have the urge to just eat due to boredom etc. i go into my music room and practice or jam, etc. Id love to hear anything you may have done yourself by the way. anytime . music is such an amazing thing.

Congrats on your sleeve. You can do this. let anyone here know when you have a question or just need to chat etc.

Not professional, but I am a tenor drummer in my local bagpipe band. I finally got my date for my sleeve, May 9th. It's awful to say but I mentally calculated whether I'd be ok to play in summer competitions or not. It looks like I'll only be missing one highland games, which is alright. My drum is heavy to carry, and my sling sits right on my belly where my incisions will be. As long as I'm ready to go for the North American Championships I'm happy!! Next year we are going to Scotland to play in the Worlds, and I will be a year out from surgery, and hopefully wearing a MUCH smaller uniform!

I used to play the drums in a grindcore band before, now I play for myself from times to times, but it's difficult with the pissy neighbors, can only play during the day when everyone is at work am I am not :/

I play clarinet. The main thing I noticed right after surgery was just how fatigued I'd get during rehearsals early on. I'm assuming from lack of calorie intake. My surgery was in November and I just finished up my concert season. It does get better over time but you def have to build your stamina back up and adjust your breathing early on!!!!! Best of luck!!!!!

Update:

10 days after my surgery I picked up my trumpet and felt fine. I did have to go slower obviously at first but now at day 12 I feel normal. I don't think I'm breathing as deep as I would have before but I know that's just my mind getting in the way.

I'm resuming my full schedule tomorrow. 2 weeks is this Tuesday and my post op appointment is Thursday. Now that I'm back to practicing I recognize how important playing he trumpet is to me, which is good. I made the correct career choice.

I'm having surgery in May. I am currently a student at a conservatory. I haven't really heard anything about waiting (I play euphonium), but it makes sense so you don't put to much pressure on the wounds as they are healing.

Yeah my doctor said 2 weeks but honestly I felt good after a few days.

I wish I could enjoy playing instruments again. But the arthritis in my hand prevent me from enjoying my first love. I cry every time I see my little one play the violin. I can't even enjoy the flute either.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
