Prepping for a 5k

Recommended Posts

I'm scheduled to have my surgery on June 2. If all goes well, do you think it would be possible to run a 5k at the end of September. I would follow c25k.

A really cool race has come up that I want to do.

Depends upon your current weight and physical condition....

IMO, you can do more harm than good rushing into something.

I worked out on the elliptical for over a year, got into shape, lost weight. Then I moved up to the treadmill.

Now I run every chance I get as part of my normal exercise routine.

Thanks. I'm 250 and don't really exercise right now. My brain says no. But the inner runner wants to break out.

What he says.

I tried too early (before surgery) and the injury was so bad I could hardly walk for a month. So I stuck to walking preparing for surgery and for a month following. I switch to the elliptical, and light weights for the next month and gradually added more (no more than 10% increase in weight and intensity per week). I started C25K in month 3 and did my first 5K 7 weeks later.

Here are some great tips from @JamieLogical:

I know you guys are right. I've emailed the organization to see if they would add a walk. They probably won't. It's on an inhibited island and they are trying to limit the environmental impact.

I walked a lot before my surgery and a lot the first month after my surgery before I was cleared to exercise. I was 282 pre surgery and had lost about 30 pounds when I started running. I started the couch to 5k in month 2 post op. I restarted it in month 2.5 and completed it in the end of month 4. Is it possible? possibly. Is there a time limit on the race? I am now nearly 5 month out and I am setting no land speed records, but I ran/walked a 5k last Saturday in 41.25. That is less than a 15 min. mile pace. Just a reminder, generally there is no rule in 5ks that you cannot run/walk or even just walk, unless there is a time limit and then you just have to be able to finish before the limit. Take it slow no matter when and where you start. if you rush the Couch to 5k, you risk injury that will sideline you and your goals.

Good luck! Start walking now in prep for surgery and you will be in much better position to make it happen this fall.

It sounds do-able, but just take it slowly. I did cto5K for my first 5K. Training for a half marathon now. When I started running, could only run 60 seconds without stopping.

I know I could walk parts but it does have a time limit. We travel together on a ferry to get back.

I was in pretty good condition before my surgery. 3 weeks and 1 day later, I did a 10K. It was the slowest done but I got it done. Yeah I did hurt/ache (and maybe a little more) but it was survivable. :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
