Not drinking enough water...but I'm not thirsty

Recommended Posts

I'm finding it difficult to drink more Water throughout the day, not because I dislike it but simply because I'm not thirsty. Does anyone else have this problem?

sometimes I don't seem to be as thirsty as other times but you have to drink Water to maintain hydration and it definitely helps with the WLS. drink first if you feel hungry, just in case you are eating first. thirst mimics hunger so keep that in mind.

Yep, me too. Before surgery I drank around a gallon a day of just plain Water. I had given up sodas and sugary drinks a few years ago. I am just over six months out from being sleeved and now I'm lucky to get in 40-50 ounces a day and that's when I have to keep reminding myself to drink my water cause I'm just not thirsty.

@@jane13 that's a good tip, I'm 1 month post op and I'm hungry throughout the day, so I'm eating about 5 small meals a day but my thirst isin't like before. Gonna have to buy a big Water bottle and just drink all day.

News alert!

You all surely remember that when you're sleeved that the largest portion of your stomach that's removed (the fundus) is where the body produces ghrelin, the hunger hormone. That's wonderful for sleeved patients for obvious reasons.

Well, guess what else ghrelin is called? The "thirst hormone." Yup, the same hormone lets us know when it's time to hydrate ourselves.

But now post-op, you have to hydrate yourself regularly without being told to do so by ghrelin. It's something all sleeved patients must do.

So if you're sitting around waiting to feel thirsty before you drink, you'll be waiting a long time.

Just drink Water whether you feel like it or not.

never drank much Water before surgery. i have a hard time getting it in. i never get in 64 oz, although that is my goal. yesterday, i started just gulping it several times a day, as well as sipping here and there. i got in 50 oz. it felt like i drank an ocean. i am going to continue to strive for 64 oz because i know it is extremely important for weight loss. i just feel drowned out. i have done everything, even set a reminder every 15 minutes. hopefully my new crazy strategy will work :)

I once heard "once you feel thirsty, you're already dehydrated".

I have the same problem. Was not a big drinker before surgery. Would drink 20oz pepsi during the day and glass of ice tea at night. That was about it. I get in 48oz of Water a day, but that is struggle sometimes. I have been getting in the habit of setting deadlines to drink everyday. 1 bottle on my way to work. 1 bottle before lunch. 1 bottle before I leave. 1 bottle at night. Doesn't always work out that way thought. Usually I am driving home with that 3rd bottle and I am forcing myself to drink the rest of it before bed.

@@Kristin7676 I've been trying to the same but I feel like I'm forcing myself, I'm going to have to go out and buy just one big bottle and make it my daily goal to drink it by bedtime.

Please read some of the posts by people who wound up in the ER due to dehydration. It is not worth it.

Please, please, please take getting enough hydration seriously.

The bonus is that it helps with weight loss.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
