Halfway thru my 6 month supervised

Recommended Posts

I am on a 6 Month supervised diet to qualify for my surgery. Already have done a few support groups and 2 dietician visits. One more dietician visit then 2 with my primary provider, plus my psych eval and finally can meet with a surgeon!

I have United for insurance and when they first told me six months, I was discouraged but it's passing very quickly! I'm on target to meet with my surgeon in August.

I have to drop 8 pounds to qualify to move forward as a requirement as well.

Anyone else looking at a similar timeline or better yet, in Maine?

I had the 6mo required visits also. This week will be my 6th. At first I was also bummed about having to wait, when I had friends that were approved and had surgery in a month. Like you, the time is passing quickly. I'm actually really happy they made me wait the 6 months. I have been using this time to try different Protein Shakes, train myself to take my Vitamins daily (I have always taken them, but can go days forgetting), and learning what foods keep me full that help get my Protein needs in.

No, I didn't have required weight loss. My doctor told me that what my insurance company is looking for is consistency. That one month I wasn't up.. one month down.. back up.. etc. I've been losing a few pounds just because I've switched to Protein Shakes for Breakfast and sometimes I have them for dinner too.

I had to do the 6 months as well...except I started back in 2014. I moved away and thought I'd just diet and exercise. No luck. I moved back and went back to my surgeon...after a few visits he suggested I gain a few pounds because insurance required my BMI to be at 40 (I was 38/39) gained a couple of pounds. Last visit is May 3rd and I'm hoping for a date for the end of the month. This has been quite the process, but I'm so ready.

I had my last (6th) PCP Supervised Diet visit this morning and submitted everything to my surgeon. I was super bummed about the 6th months, too. But it has totally flown by! It also gave me time to read and watch everything about VSG as possible.

I thought that wait was bad, now waiting for approval seems like it's going to be terrible. Lol

Did anyone else have to pay out of pocket for their supervised dietician/nutrition visits ?

Yup. I just had one but it was $60. My supervised visits were with my PCP.

I'm glad I'm not the only one! Glad to have support on this site too. It's really nice to get responses and read so much info!

All of my visits have been covered by my insurance so far, which is great.

I started the process last year and switched jobs and they have more strict requirements with this provider so I had to start all over again. Can't wait to finally get this done and get healthy!!!

I also had to pay out of pocket for my dietician appointments. $350 for the 6 before surgery and $350 for the 6 after surgery. That is the only thing my insurance didnt cover.

Wow.. did your insurance co make it mandatory to meet with the dietician that often? I had to do 6 mo of visits, but it was with my general doctor.

Yes the insurance company required it once a month for 6 months before surgery and 6 months after. I dont have to lose any weight before surgery but I cant gain any weight or they will disqualify me.

Actually I do like the dietician she pretty much lets me know what all I'll be eating after surgery and what Vitamins and stuff I will need. She is very informative.

That's nice. I had to go to one group class with the dietician, then I'll meet with her again right before my surgery then two weeks after. I bet seeing her more often is beneficial.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
