lfw57 17 Posted April 10, 2016 (edited) I'm pre-op and have been having a Protein Shake daily for about a month. Is a high quality brand: BlueBonnet. I've been experiencing heart palpitations and abnormally high blood pressure.I read that it's a common reaction to Tyrosine, which is included in the list of ingredients - part of the amino acid profile in whey.< br />Has anyone experienced this side effect from whey?Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App Edited April 11, 2016 by lfw57
Proud2BMe 1,016 Posted April 10, 2016 Nope. Your symptoms can also be a result of being malnourished or not getting enough key Vitamins and minerals. Talk to your doctor. You might want to switch brands as well.
Valentina 2,642 Posted April 11, 2016 Nay, you're not weird. I get the "flushes" and hot flashes when I ingest whey products. I've grown to accept them as my own personal heat source. However, if you're concerned about heart connections, by all means call your bariatric team. I'd be very interested to hear what they say. Take care, my friend. reinventingmyself 47 Posted April 11, 2016 (edited) I am so happy to see this. I use Isopure unflavored which is a whey Protein. I have been telling my husband that I get heart palpitations every time I use it. He didn't think so. I had did a google search but nothing really came up so I thought I was tripping. I was going to ask my dr. about it at next appointment. So glad I am not the only one . Valentina 2,642 Posted April 11, 2016 Please, let me know what they say. I guess we will just have to "weird" together.
lfw57 17 Posted April 11, 2016 Thanks all - Glad I'm not alone. I've had very minor palpitations for years, but they sprung up in intensity and frequency... along with my blood pressure. I thought it might be Vitamin D or something else, until I read this: http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=106852601&page=1 I have an appointment with my nutritionist this week (my last one before submitting for insurance approval...yay!) and will bring it up with her. I'll post a follow up. For now I'm taking it out and replacing with Greek yogurt in my morning smoothie. Have been checking out vegan Protein powder options but none look very palatable, although I do like the idea of getting more plant nutrition this way. Again.. thanks for the replies...love this forum!
lfw57 17 Posted April 25, 2016 Quick update. I think it was caffeine. Had been increasing my coffee consumption without realizing it. I cut back to one a day and they decreased significantly. I also cut back on the amount of whey I was consuming at once to 30g or less. Thanks all for the reply. I had them checked and they are benign. I also have reactive hypoglycemia so this could also contribute. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App
