Need help choosing my protein shake.

Recommended Posts

So I've been trying to get more Protein into my system and get closer to the surgery diet as I can while I wait to start the process. I'm on the Keto diet but I'm having problems getting my Protein in. Which one of these 3 would you guys choose? I know everyone loves the Premier Protein ones but it bothers me that they have more carbs in them than I've seen others contain.

GNC Pro Performance 100% whey Protein

I'm probably making this harder than I need to but after being so unhealthy for so long I want to make sure I'm getting as many nutrients as I can the best way that I can.

1 scoop of the Isopure has the best numbers. I personally like the Syntrax Nectars.< /p>

The first priority is to find the one that you will drink - the one with the greatest specs is useless if you can't stand to drink it. Then look for one that is 100% whey isolate, as that is better absorbed than whey concentrates or blends (which are cheaper.) A whey blend that you will drink is better than a whey isolate that you won't drink. Generally for our use, go for the one that has the most Protein per calorie that you can find and tolerate.

Of the three that you posted, the Isopure looks best, and is whey isolate rather than a cheaper blend or concentrate as in the other products. As a bonus, it has a decent amount of potassium in it, which is something that we don't get much of (particularly on the low carb diets that are popular these days) and isn't supplemented well with the normal OTC supplements.

I would recommend you get samples of several. Buying the best one in the world won't do you much good if you can't tolerate it.

GNC has sample size pouches of Quest Protein powder, and probably others. Quest is the one that I use, so that is why I know about it.

"Bariatric Choice" also has sample sizes of many of their products--some of them free.

Keep in mind that your "taste" might change after surgery, so what you like pre op, you may hate post op.

Happy Hunting!

Thank you so much for all of your advice! I'm gonna try and get the samples for the Isopure to see if I like it, and I'll get others so I know how they taste. I'm kind of a 'if it's edible I'll eat it' person so hopefully I won't be too picky with the shakes either.

I use Unjury and Premier. They are both high quality Protein sources.

All three seem to be O.K. Over 20 grams of Protein, low sugar. But the important thing is to find one that you can tolerate. For some types of WLS, you taste buds may change radically. So you might want to wait till after surgery to make your final selection. You don't have to like the taste of Protein shakes but you absolutely have to be able to tolerate the type you finally select.

I am an advocate of unjury. I love the chocolate Splendor. It tastes like chocolate milk. I mix it with Fairlife milk and its 31 g. of Protein in one serving. You have to order Unjury online, but they offer a starter kit, which I found to be extremely helpful. Their shipping is reasonable and flat rate so once you decide you like it, you can order more and the shipping becomes a smaller proportion!

My dietitian agrees with the assessment that the taste buds do change after surgery I found that blending the Protein shakes with ice works best for me prior to surgery hopefully that will remain the same after surgery

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
