NUT & Surgeon Diffrences

Recommended Posts

I just have to say, I've been following and participating on this board for a little over a month and I am FLOORED by the vast different in advice each our NUT & surgeons have given us. We all had the same type of surgery - how can the professional advice be so incredibly different? Seems we've also had varying responses and recovery times to the surgery and I understand that, but Woah! What differences in professional opinions!

I thought the same when reading the post. My surgeon was just recognized as one of the best Bariatric surgeons in the US and I found myself questioning him about all the other surgeon and NUT advice from this forum. I was terrified and almost called it off 1 week pre-op.

You are overthinking this. Pick a b s bariatric practice with an excellent track record and do what they say - follow the program you signed up for.

There is a lot of variety, and while there may be some differences in knowledge, I think most of the variation is explained more by differences in philosophy:

  • Don't want the patient to be injured by what they consume
  • Don't want the patient to be ill or in pain or discomfort due to what they consume
  • Want the patient to lose a lot of weight, and ideally quickly
  • Want the patient to be able to control their own appetite and eating - something they likely have faced challenges in the past

....and I think some doctors are just more conservative than others in setting the parameters for what should go in and at what schedule...

Overthinking, I don't know. But oversharing perhaps! I'm gonna keep my plan to myself, I think, going forward. Mine seems to be more progressive than many others. :)

My doctor and nut were actually pretty scary in what they told me to be prepared for pre-op. And then post-op they were a lot more liberal. I think they just wanted to make sure that you were really prepared. Also keep in mind that instructions differ based on issues they have experienced with their own patient population. If you are having gastric sleeve for instance it might depend on if you also have to have a hernia repair etc. I looked up printed and read the sleeve pre and post op guidelines from the Brigham (Harvard) before I went in for my first consult. Nonetheless I did try to follow MY DOCTORS advice because he knew my case and his technique and outcomes better than anyone. So go with what your Dr says:-)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
