I wish I had known...

Recommended Posts

I was just banded on 8/3 and I researched very, very well in preparation. The one thing I did not see anything about and would have been helpful to know is that it can be hard to wear your normal clothes after surgery. It was easy to wear comfortable stretchy clothes over the weekend, but I went back to work on Monday and I have had a problem all week with wearing something that does not irritate my incisions. I also had a little swelling around the port site. I am sitting here right now with my pants unbuttoned and unzipped for comfort. This is especially true since my clothes were a little tight to begin with and somtimes pushes the fat up when I put them on (you know that innertube look I'm talking about) Had I known I would have invested in something like summer dresses or stretchy pants for the first couple of weeks. Other than that things have been great and this borad was VERY helpful in preparing me.

If you've ever had surgery, this is a given. The week before surgery I went out and got some "fat pants" (stretchy black leggings I could wear to the hospital and back and also for the first week at work). I could not wear a bra because of potential irritation in the port area, so I just wore things with jackets. Probably by the 10th day or so after surgery I was able to wear all my other clothes without a problem.

I don't think this is a "given" after surgery. In fact I had asked the nurse about what i could wear and she told me I wouldn't have to worry about it. Also, depending on where your incisions are the bra may not be an issue. I have been fine with my regular underwires and even wore one home after surgery. I just think others should be aware so they don't end up with their pants undone like me.

Thanks for warning us, My surgery is most likely some months away but I appreciate anything and everything anyone can tell me to help me be prepared.

I think that everyone is different. It depends on where your surgeon puts your incensions. I had absolutely no problem with pants because I have no incensions near my waist. I did, however, have a problem with a bra for a couple of days because that is where my port incension is located. It is good to go to the hospital with lose fitting, stretchy clothes because you never know how you are going to be.

You can wear a girdle for the time being to keep things from rubbing on it. It is annoying, but it doesn't last for very long :tea:

I wore stretchy pants and kept them below all of my incisions, and wore baggy shirts to hide my belly.

I never had any issues with wearing normal clothes. I was banded on a Monday and went back to work the next monday wearing normal work clothes. It may just depend on the person.

I was banded on a Tuesday night and wore sweats home from the hospital the next day, with my bra. Back to work on Monday and never had a problem. I do think, however, I was told to watch what clothes I wore as well as having easy shoes as it was hard to tie the left one!! It seems it just depends on where the incisions are and all that.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
