charley horses ...

Recommended Posts

WOW,

My husband suffers with them so bad that he screams and walks through the house up to several times a night sometimes. I thought it had something to do with his diabetes but it doesn't. Would you believe I've heard probably 10 people tell us to try the hotel soap bar under the sheets and I have a bunch of them from my banding in Mexico so I guess it's not going to hurt to try. I mean he will holler, scream and almost cry and I usually end of getting tickled at him and then he gets mad. He's tried all of the Vitamins and stuff but we also haven't tried the pickle juice. He'll think I'm wacked when I put soap under his sheets and give him Pickle Juice, oh well, he thinks I am half the time anyways. LOL.

Hugs,

Sherri Jo

Pickle Juice is good a great stuff in my book. If you look at ingredients there is Calcium chloride as well as vinegar the cacium is in the liquid allowing it to react quickly. The vinegar among other things helps neutralize lactic acid. At least that is how it was explained to me. It really seems to help.

When I was pregnant, my doctor told me it was from a lack of Calcium. Try taking a suppliment, see what happens.

I'm allergic to dairy, so this has always been an issue for me.

Potassium works well for midnight charley horses. Also, i I have found that when I am bending at the knees where my buttocks nearly touches the floor when I am cleaning (for example) that very night, 9 times out of 10...I get the charley horses. If I am cutting off some circulation in the back of my legs by performing squats, I get the charley horses that same night so check that out and see if you're doing that.

Tonic Water works perfectly! If you can't get past the taste try diluting it and/or flavoring it. It works so good I took it all the way to Africa with me in '05.

My doc said you would have to eat a truck load of bananas to get the amount of potassium your body needs, so I don't think one bananna is going to make to much of a difference in leg cramps.

Different doctors have different opinions. It's always good to get a 2nd opinion if you are trying to troubleshoot what's really going on. According to my doctor, potassium was the answer for the charley horses as I consume plenty of Calcium already.

Calcium deficiency was not the answer for me.

I have just noticed lately that I'm "almost" getting foot cramps at night. I'll stretch my toes or move my foot in a certain way and feel the cramp begin and have to stop whatever movement/position I'm holding quick smart or there'd be a full blown cramp.

So not severe, but still, unusual for me. I had leg cramps during my first pregnancy but not the other two and it hasnt bothered me since I've been banded, just in the last few weeks.

I've been beyond stressed and busy for the past few weeks and have eaten really badly - hardly any food and what there has been of it less than perfect. I'd say that's the explanation for me.

A couple of years ago, my DH was in the hospital, and had such severe cramps, they tested him, everything was within normal ranges...the Dr.'s suggestion was orthotics for his shoes....ka-ching!!!! $350.00 not covered by insurance!!!

Sounds ridiculous, and I have no idea why it works, but we are one of the ones who swear by the bar of soap in the bed. My DH was up hopping minimally 5 nights a week, from either charlie horses in his calves, or in the arch of his foot. So we figured what the heck, if it does no good, we put the soap in the shower...nothing ventured, nothing gained. OMG the difference in the first few days was unbelievable!!! Now about every 5 months or so, he cramps, and we change the bar of soap...and no problems!!!

Since it is him getting them, I put the bar of soap (anything but Dial or Dove) between the fitted sheet and the mattress pad, in the foot area on his side of the bed.

Try it----a bar of soap is cheap!!! If it doesn't work, toss it in the shower.

Kat

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
