Mirena removal

Recommended Posts

So I had my mirena put in 6 months pre op and put on a significant amount of weight. I'm 4 months post op and just don't feel like I'm where I need to be and feel like my mirena might be contributing to the issue. On top of weight gain I have dealt with crazy moody swings, terrible acne breakouts, and bad cramping. Has anybody else had this issue? I have an appointment to have it removed Monday. Really hoping removing it will help. I had the band to bypass revision in December and felt so much better about having one piece of foreign crap removed from my body, hoping this will be the same way

I'm on my 2nd one but didn't experience weight gain or any other stuff. In fact, this one is actually caused my period to almost disappear which is great because it used to be so heavy. I will say that having it removed was pretty painful, more than I expected it to be. Good luck!

I'm on my 2nd Mirena. LOVELOVELOVE not having periods. It also reduced my Migraines. I gained weight during the time I've had it, but I don't think it contributed. That said, everyone has a different experience.

Did you find if it was the cause of your weight issue? I'm on my second Mirena IUD and haven;t had any problems. I have loved my virtually period free life for the last 5 years!

I would be skeptical that the Mirena is causing your weight problem. Yes, it has hormones, but they do not get absorbed systemically, like if you were on the pill. Therefore, in theory, the weight gain side effects would be less than with other hormonal birth control. Personally, I would take a closer look at what you're eating and exercise level. What has your nutritionist and/or surgeon said?

I had the Mirena on for 3 months and in that time I gained 40 lbs and never took it off. I also had terrible cystic acne along my jawline. The Mirena was horrible for me. In fact, up until I had the Mirena placed I had been losing weight at a fairly constant rate. Suffice it to say I had it taken out and the weight gain stopped, the acne cleared up, and I began to normalize. I also happen to be sensitive to estrogen, so that could be part of my issue.

Duuuuude the Mirena was the WORST thing to ever happen to me! Ever! My doctors made me keep it in for 6 months. By the end of the six months I was in such a fragile state of mind. I had to be placed on anti-depressants & anxiety medication. My weight fluctuated daily, between a 2lbs. loss to a 10lbs gain. In those six months I bled almost consistently. I had a few days to a week between periods. I had periods that lasted a month! A month!!! Wtf. I probably was period free maybe a whole month in that six month timeframe. Worst thing ever.

I had several problems with the Mirena. Historically I've done bad with any type of hormonal birth control, which is why I didn't want it in the first place but my OBGYN kept saying how awesome it is, how the hormonal dosage is so light and how I wouldn't get a period. Had a period for 5 of those 6 months. My Iron level was low, my weight fluctuated between a 2lbs loss to a 10lbs gain DAILY! (I was walking/jogging 3-5 miles daily & eating low cal/low carb) and I almost had to be committed to the psych department by the end of the 6 months. The only reason I wasn't committed was because I begged my husband at the time not to do it. It was the absolute worse thing I ever did. I can't believe I was dumb enough to being pressured into getting it.

Hey ladies! Got it removed and lost 15 pounds in two weeks right after. It definitely had something to do with my struggle to lose weight! No more cystic acne either

I had a ton of issues on Mirena. I was on it for 4 years before I removed it. As soon as it was gone, my cystic acne reduced, my depression symptoms increased, and my Migraines decreased. I was also having constant yeast infections which immediately stopped after it was removed. The doctor said that it just doesn't agree with everyone and that sometimes people don't do well with foreign things in their bodies.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
