Hiatal Hernia Repair with Sleeve?

Recommended Posts

Anyone have both done? I was getting comfortable with the Sleeve stuff and know the left incision will be the worst pain, but I'm worried about the hernia repair. I think mine is small, but as mentioned in other posts it is the silent kind that the radiologist said is dangerous.

Worried about what to expect for healing and pain tolerance? I have a very low tolerance for pain unfortunately....

Yes, had it done. Had no idea if it made any difference as I had no symptoms. For the first week, had so much swelling it was hard to get fluids down, but not sure if that was due to the hernia repair, or just "lucky" (doctor said every time he has a major sweller from cutting/surgery, it happens to be the really fair skinned people for some reason).

I have a very high threshold for pain, but I really had absolutely zero pain, because my doc also said he makes a point of getting as much of the gas out of the abdomen as possible due to the pain that it causes (they inflate the abdomen with gas in order to move around in there with the laproscopic tools and it can get trapped and HURT for days as you absorb/dissipate it).

The only discomfort I had was the large incision where they pull out the stomach part they cut out; it was sore like I'd done lots of sit-ups for about two weeks. I only took pain meds the day of surgery. Once home, nothing because it didn't bother me.

But you have no way of knowing if you'll have no, mild, or bad pain for the first couple of days - it's all the skill of the surgeon and pure luck really. But it is temporary and they do make sure to give you decent pain meds and you can always call your doctor's office (and should) if the pain is really bad.

I had a hernia repair and I couldn't tell I'd had anything extra done after surgery. I had an easy and uneventful recovery.

Thanks guys! This surgeon is the best in the state and one of the top in the country so I am hoping to have a similar experience-except I am extremely fair skinned and blond to boot!

I think the closer it gets to my date the more my brain is playing the fear card. Ugh. I did have my appendix out and remember the pain came from sneezing lol but generally it was more a pain in the butt to get up or down versus actual surgery pain. I'm hoping for that to be the case with this...but this seems much more major.

I really enjoy these boards as they help me through the processing of what is about to happen!

I had both, and the hernia repair only meant an extra incision up near the hernia. No pain there, the only pain I had postop was from the larger incision where they removed my stomach. That hurt getting in and out of bed for a few days, but I never took anything stronger than plain tylenol once I was home.

And I'm as fair, and as blonde, as they come ;-)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
