4 days post-op questions

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone! I had surgery on April 5th. That first day and night while in the hospital was miserable and I was so nauseous. My pain and nausea are now under control, and my surgeon and the nurses at the hospital were impressed at how I handled the surgery and how good I was doing. I don't see my surgeon until 2 weeks post-op but right now I seem to be having a hard time getting all my liquids in! I sip the 2 Oz of shakes every hour until I get the recommended daily amount, and I sip liquids every 15 mins, but I don't know how I am supposed to get half my body weight in ounces! I can't gulp or drink cold liquids right now and I need any suggestions I can get! Thank you in advance!

Just focus on things one hour at a time. Don't think about what if this or what if that. Just one hour at a time. Do what you can. Worrying yourself will cause unnecessary stress on your healing body.

Thanks, I needed to hear that!

@@lehnuh - I agree with the OP. focus on the hour and do what you can. stay hydrated...sip sip sip. if u can get Protein in liquid form, great.

hydration, moving and trying to get some Protein in the first week or so was what I was told to focus on.

You sound like you're doing really well, probably better than you realise. Just relax, sip away (have you tried warm milk by the way? If cold drinks are tough it might be worth a shot :-D) and take little walks about the place. Everything gets easier as the days go by!

Congratulations on your surgery and progress so far. It sounds like you need to sip more often than once every 15 minutes. When I was at your stage I was literally sipping all day.

It does get easier.

So sip liquids every 4-5 minutes instead of every 15

Thanks, I will do that! The instructions from my surgeon said every 15 minutes so I was sticking to that but I'll be more frequent about it!

Congrats on your surgery. I am days post op and agree with the other posters. Take care of you. The oz. you need are goals not absolutes, especially in the beginning. I feel like I am drinking a lot but realize I'm only about 30-40oz. My biggest issue has been reminding myself to sip! I find I'll take a mouthful like I used to do - and then have to let it trickle down so I don't hurt my stomach.

Good luck! Hang in there. Wishing you a healthy and speedy recovery!

Hi, I had my surgery the same day as you. I am more comfortable with room temperature Water. I am sipping as often as I can I go around everywhere with a bottle of Water in my hand, I am getting 40-50oz. In a day. I do 4oz Protein shake in about 30 min. I am also adding unflavored Protein powder to everything, my broth, my sugar free pudding, Tomato Soup. Congrats on surgery, I am so excited for us!

My surgery was April 5th too. I am now up to 40 ounces of liquid per day and another 6oz in Protein shake. I tend to tolerate the liquid better if its cold. I still have no desire to eat.

Congrats!!! Once I read this, I decided to try cold liquids and it's MUCH better than room temperature. I'm glad I can tolerate them. I don't have a desire to eat either.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
