Hi toots2

I am from the UK and am being banded on 15 September so we can go through this together. I am a big rubbish at these forums, not very experienced on them so find it hard to find a message from someone the next time i log on. hope you get this. would be good to have someone from the uk to talk to. i am really scared about it - the 2 week liquid diet, the scars, worrying that the band might not work for me etc.,

That does sound gross...... i would like to loose about 6 stone, Really terrified about the op, as i've never has any kind of op before, but my surgeon...whom i saw today was very reassuring,

well what i can tell you with reasonable confidence toots is that keyhole surgery is no big deal. i understand why you would be so scared if you have not had surgery before but as an experienced key holer (6 surgerys endometriosis and knee probs after car accident) it will be nowhere near as bad as you imagine. the worse bit is going down to theatre get tearful and wonder if you will wake up but you remember nothing and wake up in the room and all is fine.

do you not have to do the liquid diet then? that is the bit that really gets to me. also, how much has your dr said you can expect to lose?

Don't have to do pre-op diet, just have something light the day before surgery, Dr says everyone lose at a different rate, but statisically you can expect to lose 50% of your excess weight in 2 years, the dietician did put me in touch with someone who has lost 85% of their excess body weight in just under a year.

that is great meeting someone who has lost 85%. i just cannot understand all the literature that says we can only expect to lose 50% of our excess weight when the restriction is permanent. i would have thought we would continue to lose until we are thin.

Hi imwiththeband,

ive been lurking around this site for months, but only joined today....following my appointment with my surgeon.....there's a lot to take in and it's a life changing decision.so i think it's good that you're taking you're time to think about what is right for YOU, How has you're mum done since her op?

Hi Kelly, I understand! Everything you have mentioned is on my mind too, though I haven't read anything too negative on this site, which is good, I think it's a big decision - changes your life in many ways. You sound determined which is sooooooo important. Are you having youtr op on the nhs or privately? In this country or abroad? Have you been thinking about it long?

I'm 45, and need to lose about 7 to 8 stone. I have a much loved 15yr old daughter I need to set a better example for!

I'm currently not snacking!

hey toots & kelly

I went with my mum to her consultations - I think I understood quite well, and I realise its a tough ride from the beginning As for mum

up and down I think - she has lost weight and you can tell just by lookig at her, but it has been slow, I have far more to lose than she did or does. I would hope to lose it more quickly. My willpower is rubbish though, and I have the thought of my daughter - should I set a better than resorting to surgery? Phew - I just don't know what to do ... I'm making a pros and cons list this week!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
