Anyone having issues with Taste Buds?

Recommended Posts

I found that things I loved, I don't care for anymore. This is the time when we discover food all over again. Have fun experiencing new flavors and trying different things.

I was just about to ask the same question. One month post op. I am on soft foods and nothing tastes the same. I have simply lost interest. Is this because of the lower levels of ghrelin? But at the same time I want food. I guess this is the head hunger people talk about. There definitely seems to be a disconnect.

I did the same thing, they recycle and there are some things that returned to normal and others did not.

The pre-op and fou stage post-op phases are as effective as a detox. You have flushed a lot of sugar, salt, and grease out of your system. Meds may be affecting your taste buds, too.

The first time I ate a french fry, at about five weeks, I gagged. Clearly, it wasn't the potato I went for, it was the salt and the grease. At the processing plant, McDonald's fries are dipped in a corn-based sugar solution before packaging. Same goes for Long John Silver's Battered Fish. I ate the fish so that I could have the greasy, salty batter.

No wonder our food tastes differently post-op. We are eating in a purer and more natural form, closer to the way food is supposed to taste without all of the additives and Condiments that we add to it. Seriously, I had to learn to eat all over again so that food is for nutrition and not entertainment and comfort.

Agree with the other posters. After all those shakes I craved veggies so I got some divine green juice that was very expensive and only 50 calories. When I saw a hamburger and fries on a fast food commercial it made me nauseous. I love my sleeve. My sleeve was very "picky" in the beginning and would only tolerate very healthy food. Now I can eat just about anything just not too much of it. I'm 7.5 months out and still have not been to a single fast food joint and don't plan to ingest those nasty chemicals again ever. I definitely have picked a French fry or two off of a friends plate at a restaurant tho. And I do eat "paleo" which includes potatoes. I have even had some Amy's organic pizza, but opted last night to make my own with cauliflower crust instead. I drink Vitamin Water zero every day and accidentally got a sugary one instead. I took one sip and spit it out because it tastes DISGUSTING. Like for real I thought holy crap what's the expiration date on this thing it tastes horrible. Then after I parting the bottle looking for an expiration date I realized my mistake and was like wow. That being said I can tolerate small amounts of dark chocolate now and the occasional treat. Just enjoy this time and your new taste buds. I make nearly everything I eat now from scratch, because that's what my sleeve wants and the sleeve gets what she wants. I take very good care of her and she takes good care of me;-)

I'm 12 weeks out & I remember thinking so many things either tasted weird, bad or were just unsatisfying to my taste buds during the first 2months. At 3 months now, I will say many things taste quite good! My tastes have changed & I find myself craving healthier foods. What a gift in itself!!! I do make sure to have a small bite or 2 of things that look delicious, so I'm not depriving myself--I used to either indulge or deprive. I've found so much balance since the sleeve. Good luck!

Yep...window of opportunity to change relationship with food. Everything tasted awful and it was a chore to eat. It's temporary.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
