1 day post-op... am I drinking too much?

Recommended Posts

I had surgery yesterday, and have been able to drink 4oz at a time. Sipping of course. But I can finish it within 5-10 mins. Am I at risk for stretching my new pouch? I had 40oz of liquids altogether today (including broth and Protein drinks), but only 150 calories. I feel really, really full, but don't feel sick or like I'm going to throw up. Do you think 4oz at one meal is too much? Thanks.

No, it isn't too much, and you can't stretch your sleeve with liquids - they slide right on through and into your intestines.

Did your surgeon give you a target for fluids each day?

I'm supposed to have 64oz of Water a day and 60 grams of Protein. He said that he doesn't expect me to meet these goals right away though.

That doesn't mean you shouldn't try.

And, no, sleeve's won't stretch from liquids. Just keep sipping.

Be thankful you are one of the lucky ones who shouldn't have problems meeting goals. It was a full time, tiresome, every waking moment job for me, but I was getting 64+oz, 60-80g Protein and 500-600 calories by Day 5.

Welcome to the losers bench!

You pretty much cannot drink too much (unless you are drinking lots of calories!) You simply have less inflammation in your stomach than some will have, so liquids go on through unrestricted, as they should. Some will have enough swelling in their stomach to significantly impede the flow of liquids for a while, which is why we start out sip, sip, sipping our liquids until things settle down.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
