Anyone get cancelled ON SURGERY DAY? If so, why?

Recommended Posts

I've been shot out of the saddle TWICE inside of a week!

First time, there was an oversight in the paper work and the cardiologist who referred me without actually clearing me was out of town until this week, so I was told to get dressed and go home last Thursday, minutes from the OR!:phanvan

We found another cardiologist to give his blessing and today I made it TO the OR table and was out. They tried unsuccesfully to intubate me. By the time they realized they needed to use Fiber optic guidance, I was bleeding and swelling too badly for THAT to work, SO, they sent me home AGAIN --- still unbanded!

**sigh**:faint:

I'm just curious -- had anyone else had this happen,....once? TWICE??

Or am I just some freak of nature!!:help:

Why did they have so many problems with intubation? Is it an anatomical issue? Inexperienced anesthesiologist? What happened?

So sorry this happened to you. I recall the other thread where you didn't have the Cardio paperwork signed. This really isn't fair, so sorry!

I'm not sure. I had hernia surgery 13 months ago -- and have gained about 25 pounds since then...perhaps that could create the difference. I'm not sure. Tomorrow I'm calling my doctor's office back and asking if this is the only anesthesiologist I have to choose from.

Again with the anesthesiologist----he was the one who caught the absence of the cardio's paper work and made a HUGE deal out of it. Today he wanted to know if I'd had the test done. I answered truthfully "No. The new cardiologist said I didn't need the test."

He said, 'WHAT new cardiologist?" I explained that when the old one couldn't be reached until this week, my GP had found one who could see me and do the test last Friday....BUT, upon examining me and taking my history, he determine the test wasn't necessary.

The anesthesiologist said, "You can't just do that!" and flounced off to call this new guy and/or rant to my surgeon. Either way, he came back and signed off on me.

I can't help but be uneasy at the thought of facing HIM again.

Sorry to check anyone's reality -- but no matter how much you might love your surgeon; the hospital staff and/or anesthesiologist may be a whole 'nuther ball game!

Pam<----sorry, I'm rambling here!

My experience wasn't as near-miss as yours, but I did have surgery cancelled on surgery day due to insurance not approving. I found out in the morning, though, before even leaving for the hospital. That was back in June. Now I've changed carriers and am counting the days until next week when I will be rebanded. Fingers crossed for both of us that things go smoothly next time!!

Wow... I have to say I'd be looking for a new anesthesiologist. This should NOT be a problem in the US. In Mexico it is a problem, but not the US. In the US the anesthesiologists contract with the hospital. So any of them in that group you can choose from. Of course, you'll want the input of your doc as he'll know who is good and who isn't. In Mexico the anesthesiologists actually work for the surgeon so we don't get a choice there.

But his attitude, his behaviors, his inability to intubate... I would refuse that guy next time. I've seen the most difficult patients intubated. It's just not that hard unless there is something really odd about your anatomy. Maybe he isn't extra experienced in obese folks. The larger the person the more difficult intubation is. But for an experienced doc it shouldn't be an issue.

When I had my surgery the anesthesiologist came to my hospital room before surgery and talked to me. He told me exactly how everything would work, what would happen, what to expect, he went over everything. He looked at my throat, answered all questions, took a surgical history, the works. Then it wasn't a huge surprise when I went to OR. I knew what and how everything was going to work and I already knew who he was before I went to OR. It makes things much easier.

Remember, 3rd time is a charm. :tea:

So sorry that you're having so much trouble w/ this. It will be a big relief when you finally get banded. I'd ask for a different anesthesiologist also. That's a bunch of crap from him and you're paying him to do a service for you and shouldn't have to put up w/ it.

Hi. I was scheduled to get banded on 08/06/07. I went under and all just to wake up to find out they couldn't do the band. They said something (im still not sure what) was torn and my stomach was sitting in my chest. They had to move my stomach back down in my belly, sew up whatever was torn, and then woke me up to tell me i only could get the gastric bypass or the sleeve. WHAT??? I was soooo pissed. I just got out the hospital today & told them hell no. They were not taking back into surgery to do nothing. You tell me they didnt see where my stomach was sitting after all those freaking tests i did? I've decided that it wasnt meant to be. Maybe later on but for now, im just chilling & will watch what I eat. After all, the 2 week preop diet taught me a few things.

Today I'm feeling it -- throat sore, mouth all bruised up.

I waited until almost noon to call the surgeon's office. They were wondering if my husband and I were so upset we'd decided to blow off the whole thing! I learned that the surgeon talked to the hospital director and told him he didn't EVER want to work with that anesthesiologist again!

SO, I'm back on the schedule for this coming Tuesday -- I should be sufficiently healed by then. Dr. Miranda is bring in an anesthesiologist of HIS choice as well as a respiratory specialist to do the intubation. And I'm at the head of the schedule, not second or third place!

Thanks for the support!

I know this isn't going to help today but I promise you, when you are thin and healthy and feeling great you will look back on all this and while you may not ever be thrilled with how it all came to be, you will sit back one day and say it was all worth it. The things we want most in life are usually the most expensive and I'm not talking dollars.

Third time is a charm! Right? :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
