Not feeling enough restriction anymore

Recommended Posts

I was banded in 2012. I love my band. It helped me to lose 60 lbs the 1st & 2nd year. I was almost at my goal. Then I just quite losing. I have had a lot of fills and unfills over the past two years due to coughing at night and heartburn.

Over past two years I have gain back almost 20 lbs!! I can't seem to get the right restriction now to lose more. Has anyone else has this problem. I don't want to gain this back. I just don't feel like I have the right restriction or can get the right restriction now.

Any suggestion?

I'm glad you posted this. I am in the same boat too. I was banded in May of 2013 and I couldn't go with any liquid in my band only a 1/2 cc of Fluid but that was really tight for me for like the first 2 years I did great. Now for about 6 months I've been able to eat more except Pasta it's not good, but I've gained about 20# too and I'm really struggling the hunger at times. I've never had a fill only 2 "unfills" due to I couldn't stand any restriction it was just too tight for my body. My Dr. has retired and now contemplating going to another clinic or Dr. to see if there is anything they can do.

Thanks,

Jan

I have a 10cc band and it has 8cc's in it. I should feel a lot of restriction, but I don't. I can eat anything.

Just wish I could get to my goal.

Are people saying they definitely had GOOD restriction, and not just for a few weeks, but genuine and sustainable, and then they start to notice they are eating more with less effort? Hunger returning? Etc??

I have been banded over 5 years...had 3 fills, all withing the first 4 months after surgery...never had a fill since.

I have very good, comfortable restriction, definitely in the Green Zone....no hunger/cravings, eating does not interest me, and when I do eat I am only able to eat so much.

Then I'll notice I am eating larger portions than usual. (I Can't believe I just ate all that!) Then I realize the restriction is just not what I am used to....

So, what I do, is I will lay off solid foods for a few days...go all liquids. Protein shakes, Soups, etc...Give everything a rest.

This. for me, usually brings about results...it will not give me something I never had, just let things return to what I call normal. Give it all a rest.

I have a theory why this is, but that's a different topic.

But this is me, I know myself and how my life is with the band...and my restriction, life in the Green is real, not temporary and has been consistant for over 5 years....

Can't speak for others, perhaps even after a few years it's time for another fill? Up till now it has been more you than your band doing the work and you are getting slack?

There are just too many variables, one must learn themselves.

I was considering a fill last fall. I was gaining weight and even able to eat a lot of fried and carby and junk foods. But I talked to my nurse practitioner, and together we decided that I would try to clean up my food plan first and see if that made a difference. Well, lo and behold, here's what happened. I gave up fried foods. I gave up my carby meals. I eliminated alcohol.I changed back to eating lean Proteins and green veggies. Restriction returned and I have been losing weight.

After one and a half years of being banded, I finally had to start working hard at losing weight. The first year and a half, it came off easily. The band was doing all the work for me. I could've been eating nothing but fried chicken and would still have lost weight. But after that first hundred pounds, the scale would not budge. Except it did budge. It started to go back up. Anyway, moral of the story is, I am living breathing proof that cleaning up the food plan helped bring back my restriction. I am quite tight enough. Matter of fact, if I swallow my salad or meat too quickly I get stuck.I hope to keep my band for a long, long time. In order to do that, I need to work with it, not try to eat around it.

This is a unfortunately a very familiar story with the band. I was banded in 2009 and had great weight loss for 2 years The.....nothing. stopped completely. The research shiws clearly that this is the bodies response to the starvation. I had my band revised in 2012 but never got real success.

Since then i have slowly regained 90% of my loss over 4 years.

Next week I'm scheduled for a revision to a bypass. My surgeon who is a leading weight loss expert in Australia said the band is simply not effective for me any more. The body fights to get back to original weight....the fat cells have a memory!

Aside from that the band has eroded into my stomach and has caused a hernia...common side effect. The European stats show that 80% of patients will have the band removed within 10 years. The procedure first started in Europe so they have more data.

If you're not getting restriction ask to be checked for slippage ir a hiatus hernia.

Does anyone know how much Dr. Cribbins charges for fills? I got my band in 2005 and haven't had a fill from him in about 6 years. I have put on a little bit of weight but don't weight to gain anymore.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
