I can drink a lot water with no choke

Recommended Posts

Just had surgery on March 31st. My questions is why I can drink Water as I used to be, I have no Water chock, I can swallow my chicken broth as normal person with no problem. And I am able to drink more than 2 liter a day. I get hungry all the time, so I keep drink chicken broth all day long. I start drink a lot of water right next day that I had surgery.

Because all what I found online said they are having issue drinking water, even just small amount of water. Is this normal?

I feel the same way. I get nauseous from Water from time to to time but other than that drinking is no problem. I'm kind of grateful for this...

Water and other liquids go right through your pyloric valve. There is nothing about the sleeve surgery that per se will restrict liquid intake. That's why most surgical teams caution against drinking your calories once you get away from a mostly liquid diet -- you could sit around and drink frappucinos and milkshakes all day and gain weight rather than lose it! The reason many people struggle with liquids in the first days and weeks after surgery is because of the swelling and trauma caused by the surgery. If you aren't experiencing that, it means you have an excellent, skilled surgeon who did meticulous work AND that you are lucky because your body heals itself very quickly. So, be happy, this is a good thing, not a bad thing. I promise you, you'll feel restriction when you move on to real solid foods (probably not puree consistency foods like yogurt or poached eggs though).

WOW!!! This really helped!!! I was beginning to think something was wrong w/ me/my procedure/pouch because I'm able to intake all my fluids (1 wk post-op today). It's challenging only because of it all being fluids but not due to my body. I really thought I might've stretched my pouch so much that it adjusted accordingly and that my procedure wasn't successful. But now reading this......I feel SO MUCH BETTER!!!!! Thanks!!!

I recall thinking the same thing right after sleeve surgery. I noticed the restriction when I moved to the soft foods. :)

Dididada22 - I had my survey April 6th and can drink Water like you can.

I thought something was wrong because I don't need to "sip" Water but my Bariatric nurse told me that as long as I don't feel sick, it's fine.

I do have to sip Protein shakes though. I think its because they are "thicker."

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
