4 days post op. What's with all this foam?!?

Recommended Posts

Sorry, you have the first complaint I have heard of this pre-op. Here is a place to start looking:

It may have absolutely nothing to do with the diet, but a medication. Let us know.

Your vagus nerve may have been irritated during the surgery. The vagus nerve can do all sorts of things like make your nose run, make you hiccup, make you burp -- and make you produce lots of foamy saliva. You may want to check in with your surgeon just to see if there is anything you need to be concerned about. I have seen a few other people post about this happening to them after surgery and they all seemed to get better within a couple of weeks.

I didn't get the foamies but have heard of a lot of people getting them. Certainly check with your surgeon to make sure everything is alright.

As far as the shakiness... It's your body going into starvation mode. You are depriving your body of all it's nutrients and this is how it's reacting. I went through the exact same thing. For me it got really bad, I had the shakes, then the foggy brain and utter exhaustion along with the hormone dump which made me cry non-stop. My recommendation would be to find a clear liquid with Protein in it. There were 2 that I personally used:

Isopure Ready to Drink - Mix 8oz of Isopure, 8oz same color Powerade Zero and 8oz of Water. Sip that throughout the day. It has roughly 13g of Protein in it.

There was another one I used but the name of it escapes me now. I bought it at the Holiday Gas station as recommended by my surgeon. It's a flavored water with 7g of protein in it. It's a clear liquid so it was ok for me to drink.

Even if you choose not to do the clear Proteins once you start on full liquids and can drink Protein Shakes again the side effects you are feeling should go away. It's just your body's way of telling you it's not happy with you trying to get healthy :)

As my grandson says, "You've been slimed!"

I used to have that slimy phlegm frequently. Now I still have it but only when I have too much liquid in my sleeve.

It just seems like it's never ending, doesn't it?

To ease your mind, give your bariatric team a call.

Be sure to post after talking with them. I, for one am very interested in hearing what they will have to say about "the slimers"...

Oh, I find that having something something salty(even a salty broth) will help to cut the phlegm--just like pouring salt onto a slug!.. Sorry for the anology :)

Thanks for all the responses. I managed to get almost an entire Protein drink down (Syntrax nectar fuzzy navel - these types are allowed on my plan) and the shakiness subsided. So yes, you were right. I stayed in the hospital for three days and literally was only able to take in Water the entire time I was there. The Protein Drink made me feel a lot better. Now! To drink another one today lol.

My SIL had the surgery in Decemver and she said she had a foamy mouth for a long time too but had no explanation for it. She said it did go away.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
