What signs should I look for to know I'm full?

Recommended Posts

I just ate almost an entire 5.3 oz container of yogurt 10 days post op, don't think I really got a full feeling from it yet, is this bad? Should I have been able to eat that much this soon? Are there signs I should look for to know I'm full? Guess I'm not feeling the restriction I expected, but maybe it's cuz it's yogurt not solid food? I've also noticed that sipping drinks is getting easier and easier now too, don't feel it sitting in my chest like I did right after surgery last week. So I don't know what signs to look for now.

I can't help with any signs to look for, but what I can suggest is to stick with the portions advised by your medical team. At 10 weeks out I still have no physical way to determine fullness - I experience no 'signs', and I certainly don't feel it. Not everyone does. You can't go wrong if you stick to the prescribed serving sizes in your plan. :)

It will be easier when you move to solid foods to able to tell. I agree to stay with portion size recommended. Mine was 1/2 cup. I usually didn't finish that but liquids go in easier and move through the pouch kinda like a funnel. When you start eating more solid foods you will know when you are done, trust me. I get a full feeling but sometimes I over do it and don't know it until I get a little nausea and a sort of hot flash hit me. Later advice... Take small bite, chew slow and like 30 times before you swallow! This helps me a lot! I also can eat a bigger portion of Soups because, once again, it is liquid. I do measure my food but even with that, for me, I definitely know when to stop because I get nauseous if I over do it! Good-Luck

Hi numby2017,

I am just a bit ahead of you at 5 weeks today. At 10 days I was able to get alot of liquids, Soup and yogurt in. I thought the surgery was a fail. Now on soft food, I feel a pressure, that's when I know to stop or the food will come up. I rarely can eat more than a couple ounces of food and liquids are even going down slowly now. Surgery was a complete success, although, I have wicked head hunger. Good luck!

My biggest downfall from previous WLS was not setting specific focus time to eat and chewing as well as I should.

I had vertical banding and restriction size made it that if I ate without thinking about it (At desk, in front of TV or doing something else) I would over eat and by the time I knew it, I was over full and sick. This I am working on doing better now since my RNY is in 5 weeks.

It should improve once you move to solid foods but meanwhile concentrate on portion sizes and time (try to eat for 20 minutes and stop at 30 Max). Some signs are hiccup, runny nose, burp, pressure in chest. It isn't the normal full feeling in our stomach we have felt before (or at least it isn't for me). Good luck! You will figure it out on time.

So...... if I suddenly start sneezing I should know I had too much? That was so funny when I had that the first time.

All the above advice is good. My problem is I get full so fast. 2-3 ounces over 30 minutes and I'm done. I'm 2 months post RNY and still have problem getting all my Protein and Water requirements. I've had nausea since day 1 postop and am on meds. I'm told this will pass but it is frustrating.

2 weeks post up tomorrow

I have noticed that after a about 20 minutes while i'm eating I burp. I have researched and this means "full". Before I knew this I would have 1 or 2 more sips; however I would get nausea after and the feeling of " I can't have one more bite" to the point where once I had a bit extra egg drop Soup and had to spit it right out because I just couldn't

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
