Help with lack of energy

Recommended Posts

I am just a little over 3 weeks out from my sleeve surgery & I have not felt good since day one. I require a nap every single day, my energy is so low that is is actually driving me crazy. I struggle with just doing day to day stuff like showers, getting dressed, cooking, etc. Every morning when I wake up it is all I can do to get out of bed & if I don't wait 15-30 mins before doing so the nausea hits me so bad. Does anyone have any recommendations? How long does this last?

Ty in advance for any help you can offer.

I think many people are under the impression that they will have loads of energy due to weight loss, but not in the first couple of months. What you are experiencing is completely normal. I would shower, rest, dress, rest, dry hair, nap. Lots and lots of naps. I was worried I would never feel normal again and then it got better after 6 to 8 weeks once I was able to get more calories in, not a lot mind you, but gradually more. Be patient with your healing, mixed up body and mind. Losing weight is hard work and you need lots of sleep.< /p>

I've always been taught that after a major surgery, it takes the body a full 6 months to fully recover. On top of that, add that your entire calorie in/out process is completely upside down of what it was pre-op.

Be patient and kind to yourself. You deserve it.

Feel better and give yourself time. You'll "get spunky" in no time. :)

There are a lot of ups and downs in the first few months. The first few weeks, are killer. I was so exhausted that sometimes when I had to go out shopping or something like that, I would get stuck in the car too exhausted to even drive home. Let alone unload the groceries. Be gentle with yourself.

I found that I was more durable at six or eight weeks. I took a lot of naps for the first two months post op. As for the nausea, I definitely went through a stage where I was pretty nauseous a lot of the time. I still can't eat before 12 PM without feeling sick to my stomach. But the nausea gets better too Once you learn what your body needs and wants, and you become flexible from day to day because your sleeve definitely will be more accommodating some days than others.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
