@@Kindle, my heart and prayers go out to you during this rough time. I am so glad you are seeing your therapist. I have suffered with suicidal thoughts since 2006, sometimes they come back full force, but as you know there are many ways to beat them back into submission! I have enjoyed your posts over the past few months, you are an inspiration :D!

I am still trying to figure out how someone reads very real warnings about the risks of eating off plan post-op to "they think I am so stupid I should die".

Because someone warns you that you could isn't the same as wanting you to at all.

Yeah. I'm struggling to understand how saying I didn't "cheat" post-op for fear of dying somehow turns into "you cheated post-op so you deserve to die!"

Yeah. I'm struggling to understand how saying I didn't "cheat" post-op for fear of dying somehow turns into "you cheated post-op so you deserve to die!"

And "struggling to understand" is how this whole thread started - because so many of us simply couldn't wrap our brains around the behavior of blatantly ignoring postop instructions. I never thought anyone on this thread was judging or belittling, so much as they were struggling to understand.

I, for one, still can't wrap my brain around the McDonald's/fried chicken/what have you choices. I'm four weeks out and my brain knows darned good and well that my sleeve is most definitely in charge of what goes into my mouth. My sleeve is definitely the boss of me!

Someone who immediately post-op is determined to eat a taco truck Breakfast burrito, a Big Mac, or any kind of fast food probably won't be deterred by encouragement not to do so -- whether the advice is delivered sugar-coated or with a heartfelt "You're an idiot if you do that!"

You can't fix stupid. Really. You can't.

But the resulting conversation is available for review by newbies who haven't yet had WLS or even decided if it's right for them. These kinds of conversations help them understand better what will be involved.

And that's the thing about message boards in general -- they're not read only by people who post on a thread, but by ten or twenty or thirty times as many lurkers who are trying to puzzle apart the landscape.

IMHO, that's why those of us who post here should say what we really think about the topic being discussed, based on our experience, observations and even our ideologies. As has been said countless times on countless message boards, including this one, take what you need, leave the rest.

To add value here, we don't have to agree on anything or please anyone else who's here. We add the most value we can when we say what we really believe is true.

@@Kindle ... I probably shouldn't be laughing at your last post, but I am.

IMHO, your appreciation of the dark humor that lurks in all our lives does offer a healthy perspective.

Yeah, life sometimes sucks. But as the Buddhists say, it's not about resisting the pain, but embracing all of life, which includes pain.

How great it is that life also includes some other things.

As always, sending you big hugs.

P.S. BTW, you weren't kidding -- you really DO have some negative WLS role models! But we gotta go with what we're given. ;)

Hey, my C. diff infection with accompanying tales of poo emergencies and fecal transplant provided entertainment for dozens of folks. No reason my mental anguish shouldn't have the same comedic relief.

You're right about the Buddhist thing.....Working on it. And just trying to rebalance things and find some of the joy that's gotta be in there somewhere.

Speaking of comedy, I thought this was pretty funny. It's the kind of therapist I would probably be.....

Ok, so BP will not let me attach the video or the direct link, but if you just copy and paste the address in your browser you should get there.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
