There's an baffling equation that some WLS patients make that, post-op, eating off-program is the same as "cheating" on a diet.

I cannot comprehend how some WLS patients don't appreciate the significant difference between "going on another diet" and having recently had 85% of your stomach excised and the remaining bits stapled together -- and what could happen if they stress those stapled-together bits.

Yet, somehow, some patients still take that risk.

This will sound heartless ... but this kind of behavior is why the Darwin Award was created.

I know, right? It's like having open heart surgery and trying to run a marathon the next day. Or having a liver transplant and then stopping for a bottle of whiskey on the way home.

Or having open heart surgery and a liver transplant and running to the liquor store the next day for a bottle of liquor. :)

--or stuffing one's face until one becomes obese...

We're all being just a wee bit too judgmental here. Let's ease off, please. I'm sure the point has been relayed.

God bless.

No, that was exactly my point. When you cheat on a diet or even overeat daily you are potentially SLOWLY killing yourself. There's a nebulous, future, distant chance that it will lead to your death. But eating solid foods or seeds or popcorn or things that can legitimately get stuck in your staple line is an immediate threat to your life. So there is definitely a very big difference.

No. Not such a big difference. If you can't see the similarities and the "holier than thou" attitudes expressed here, then------------well, I'll pray for your enlightenment.

Educate/support with patience, tolerance and example----not by ridiculing, mocking or sarcasm.

Prayers going up.

Where did I ridicule or mock anyone in this thread? I simply said that *I* could not understand it. I didn't call anyone names. Didn't say anyone was stupid or wrong. I just said I couldn't understand it.

I explained MY way of thinking. Didn't criticize anyone else's way of thinking.

Valentina, I'll match your faux religious euphemisms with this one that means the same thing:

Bless your heart.

You calling me judgmental and "holier-than-thou" is the only ridicule I see going on in this thread. Someone talked about "cheating" post-op. I explained how TO ME "cheating" post-op is nothing like "cheating" on a diet, because it poses immediate risk to one's life. That was all that happened. Go back and re-read my posts. Where was I judging anyone? Where was I ridiculing anyone?

Not for anything, but aren't support groups supposed to be confidential: "That happens/said in group stays in group"?

Obviously this person has "issues". I don't know if he would appreciate his "issues" being talked about outside "group" without his knowledge.

Just a thought...

Lol! It's not like she gave us his name and address....

Hello everyone my name is Marie. I am a human being with feelings.

Well first off, yikes. I did not expect someone to imply that I am so stupid I should die.

Maybe I have misunderstood. At any rate, Valentina: I like you. I think we're both perhaps sensitive to an extent that other people don't always appreciate a good quality. I've always had very high empathy for others. I appreciate you stepping in when people seem to be attacking me.

For the record I had full sodium chicken broth, AFTER talking with my Dr about how I'm routinely exceeding my Water goals. But I shouldn't have to defend myself to others. Especially not when I made my original post with the thought that maybe somebody else could relate and share their experience/struggles as well. Human connection. Relating to one another. We all need this. Instead I feel that I've been condemned by strangers who were quick to judge me based on little information. I hold no grudge, but I certainly feel less than welcome here.

Edit: Misspelled Valentina. Whoops 0_0

Marie, that's crazy that full sodium broth caused a weight gain. I didn't realize our new bodies were so sensitive to sodium changes, especially when we so much of our early diets is liquid. You would think just the pure amount of liquid going in would cause your kidneys to kick out excess Water.

My only theory was he must just be eating a bite at a time all day long to get it all in. And have a sleeve of steel.

I can't imagine my sleeve is a diva, she gets mad if I sip my broth too fast.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
