I'm almost 8 weeks post op (I had RNY). Now that my appetite is back, I feel hungry all the time! I'll eat, but an hour later, I'm hungry again! I try not to allow myself too get full, but just satisfied, but a hour later I need to eat or I feel that gross emptiness in my pouch. Has anyone else experienced this? It's so weird to me.

It is most likely head hunger. If you feel it is true hunger, eat something low calorie, nutrient dense. When I have days when I feel hunger more than usual, I fill up on veggies. Lots of steamed squash or zucchini with low cal butter spray.

Are you drinking with your meals? If so, you could wash your food down leaving your pouch empty.

I do take a few sips when I eat, but I don't full on drink. I think I eat too quickly, though. I forget to slow down, which I think, leaves a lot of air in my pouch, so I'm not eating as much as I actually could. I don't know, maybe it is head hunger. This whole thing is a learning experience. I'm going to put myself on a schedule for meals and Snacks and see if that helps.

How long do you wait to start drinking again? I have realized if I start drinking too soon it'll flush my stomach and I'll feel hungry more often. Also, when I actually feel hungry I make sure to eat something high Protein (protein bar most of the time) to make sure to stay full.

During the first few months post-op, my surgeon adviced not to drink 30 minutes before and after the meal, maybe you should try that?

No, I know I'm not supposed to drink while I eat, but every now and then I take a sip if I'm parched. I don't full on drink. But I forget to stop drinking 30 minutes before I eat. I've got myself on a schedule today to see if it helps.

for some people (like me....) hunger is really dehydration. Try warm drink when you are hungry. See if that makes the hunger feeling go away.

I was like you only to learn it's not hunger..it's your stomach rumbling that FEELS like hunger. Two different deals. That's what someone explain to me and it really made sense. Hope that helps and oh...I was eating to fast as well. It's been 6 months and I still work on it.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
