Why did you choose VSG over bypass?

Recommended Posts

I've been focused on the sleeve from the start because someone close to me had it done. But then I realized I should consider all options. I know the surgeon/docs will discuss the differences and suggest the one they think would be best for my situation, but I'm just curious why you guys chose the way you did.

Thanks :)

I chose the sleeve because it didn't have as many bad side affects. I didn't care if the weight came off a little slower. I didn't want my inners rerouted either.

I chose the sleeve because I take a lot of supplements - most importantly Salmon oil for ADD, and with the sleeve I could continue to do so. I do not have reflux or anything like that which would have made bypass the better option.

I too chose VSG from a family members results, I felt the bypass side effects especially anemia would work against my heart condition (already had my heart bypass) and I wanted slow weight results

For me, the bypass leads to malabsorption issues - that concerned me a little bit. Also, the sleeve was designed for severely overweight people as a stepping stone to bypass (they would perform the sleeve surgery on a severely obese person who was at risk for bypass - once they lost enough weight they would then have bypass surgery). In my mind, I thought "if the sleeve doesn't work, I could go the bypass route" and had that discussion with my surgeon - he agreed.

Because my surgeon suggested so.

Less likely for dumping, less Vitamins (typically), no rerouting of my organs, and I didn't have any comorbidites.

I asked a similar question. my doctor suggested I do the RNY because my grazing throughout the day and my addiction to sugar and I had to really think it over and do the research .. I don't have diabetes or acid reflux and Im under the impression that I'm obese but not "thaaaaat " obese .i always thought this was a last resort form of surgery these days ( no shade)

they had scheduled me a date for the bypass but I decided to change it to the sleeve because that is what I initially wanted and I do not want my organs rerouted

so now I'm waiting for a new date for my sleeve ..

this whole journey has shown me my patience has become much better through this lengthy process ..

Five years ago when I had to make the decision, I was the only person having sleeve surgery.

Our support group had about 75--100 people attending and I was the only one getting sleeved. I had the feeling that everyone in my support group felt sorry for me. After all, Gastric Bypass was "The Gold Standard" of WLS.

I chose sleeve surgery because I could come home the same day. Period. I was needed at home and having sleeve surgery to gone for the least amount of time.

Am I regretting my sleeve now 5 yrs later? nope--not one bit.

You went home same day? That's great! I'm hoping for a limited hospital stay. I prefer to recover at home once the serious complications are ruled out :)

I prefer the VSG because I take a lot of medications - finding the right combination took years during which I couldn't work or go to school. Don't want to go through that again with the malabsorption issue with RNY if I don't have to.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
