2 months out and still can't get in all my liquids and protein!

Recommended Posts

In a few days I'll be 2 months post-op and I'm having a terrible time getting in all my liquids and Protein.

I can only eat about 5-6 bites at any meal and I only eat things low in fat and high in Protein. I make sure I wait at least 30 min after I eat to start drinking again. I also start drinking first thing in the morning and continue sipping (I take my YETI cup with me EVERYWHERE) all day.

But I just feel sooooo full (which I am grateful I can feel my restriction) but I'm only getting around 700 calories a day, about 40 oz of liquid a day and about 40-50 (if I'm lucky) of protein a day. But some days, my tummy is just rumbling and I can't take in much at all. I diligently record everything I eat and drink and I am walking about 3 miles a day. But today I started a workout class and I almost fainted because I just don't think I had enough nutrients in my system.

I know I'm chronically dehydrated but my doctor just says to "keep trying". And I TRULY am but if any of you have some tricks up your sleeve, I would love to try them! TIA

Have you tried all of the usual tricks for getting in your Water? Mio or Crystal Lite? Experimenting with temperature? Drinking tea or coffee instead of plain Water?

5-6 bites is VERY undescriptive, since everyone takes different size bites. Can you translate that to grams or ounces for us since you say you are logging all your food? What does your typical day of food look like?

I have not had this problem myself, but my surgeon warned that cold liquids can make you spasm, which can make you feel full and not allow you to drink any more.

I have tried all the water tricks. The thing that best works for me is PowerAid Zero and I have just discovered unsweet ice tea is working well. But plain water still makes me a little nauseous. I'm just so tired of poweraid and drinking all the time, though!

And you are right...we all eat different size bites. I'm able to get in about 2 - 2.5 oz of meat and about 1 oz of vegetables at a time. I can get up to 6 oz of food if it is something like Soup though. I take small bites, chew super well and put my fork down and wait between bites.

Okay, so it sounds like you are able to eat a pretty normal amount of post-sleeve food. Your restriction will probably lessen a little around 9 months out, but where you are now is normal for how far post-op you are. How many times are you eating a day? Here's about what I was doing at your stage to get my 100 grams of Protein in:

Breakfast: Protein Bar/Shake (20 grams)

Morning Snack: Reduced Fat String cheese (8 grams)

Lunch: Leftover meat from a Previous dinner, usually about 2-3 ounces (16-20 grams)

Afternoon Snack: Dannon Light & Fit Greek Yogurt (12 grams)

Dinner: meat, usually about 2-3 ounces (16-20 grams)

After dinner Snack: Protein Bar/Shake (20 grams)

The "meat" I had for dinner was usually a portion of whatever protein my husband cooked for his dinner, usually half as much as he served himself and then I would save the other "half of my half" for a later lunch. So if he made meatloaf and mashed potatoes, I'd eat half of my portion and store the other half... and no potatoes obviously. Or if he did chicken and rice, same thing. I would skip the rice altogether and save half of my serving for lunch.< /p>

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
